Al Roker Reflects on Memorable Ewok Encounter from 2009
Al Roker, the renowned weather anchor for NBC’s Today show, fondly recalls an unusual on-air incident that took place during a Halloween special in 2009. The event featured a Star Wars theme, marking a memorable moment in Roker’s lengthy career as he celebrates his 30th anniversary with the program.
On October 31, 2009, Roker, dressed as the iconic character Han Solo, participated in a segment that showcased Halloween-themed cocktails alongside co-host Ann Curry. The show received special props from Lucasfilm, including actors in Ewok costumes. Roker reminisced about the production’s playful atmosphere, stating, “The folks from Lucasfilm provided props and we had an X-wing fighter out on the Plaza. We had R2-D2, C-3PO, and Ewoks. And the Ewoks I guess had stopped at the Cantina bar before the show because they were very naughty Ewoks.”
The segment took an unexpected turn when two Ewoks invaded the set. As they mimicked Michael Jackson’s moonwalk and grabbed drinks, one of the Ewoks humorously approached Roker and began to hump his leg. In the moment, he looked into the camera and quipped, “I feel so dirty.”
Reflecting on the incident years later, Roker expressed joy over the unexpected nature of the event. “Every time I watch it, I just break out, it makes me laugh because, it’s like, ‘Wow, nobody saw that coming. No one had that on their bingo card,’” he shared. His lighthearted approach indicates that, despite the unusual nature of the incident, it remains a cherished memory.
The segment has continued to resonate with audiences over the years, marking a notable point in television history. Roker’s commentary underscores a broader point about the lasting impact of spontaneous moments in live television. He humorously noted that the Ewok’s antics were not planned, adding, “I know they probably would hate me bringing this up, but to this day it still makes me laugh.”
This incident has been part of Roker’s journey since he joined Today in 1996, when he replaced Willard Scott. His tenure on the show has included numerous highlights, but the Ewok encounter remains one of the most memorable. Today, viewers can continue to see Roker on NBC from 07:00 to 11:00 every morning.
The humorous nature of the segment and its longevity in the public’s memory exemplify how unexpected occurrences can create lasting connections between television personalities and their audiences. The Star Wars franchise, which has enjoyed renewed success since its acquisition by Disney, showcases how even the most whimsical moments can contribute to a larger cultural narrative.
