BritBox Acquires U.S. Streaming Rights for ‘A Woman of Substance’
BritBox has secured the U.S. streaming rights for A Woman of Substance, a new adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s bestselling novel. The drama, produced for Channel 4 in the UK, features acclaimed actress Brenda Blethyn in the lead role, alongside Jessica Reynolds, known for her work in Outlander. This adaptation marks a significant venture for BritBox, expanding its offerings in the competitive streaming landscape.
Overview of the New Series
A Woman of Substance follows the compelling journey of Emma Harte, portrayed by Blethyn, who transforms from a struggling maid in Yorkshire, England, in 1911 to one of the wealthiest women in the world. The story is set against a backdrop of ambition and resilience, culminating in Emma’s rise to power in a luxurious New York penthouse. Reynolds plays the younger version of Emma, providing a glimpse into her formative years.
This adaptation comes more than three decades after the original 1980s miniseries, which starred Jenny Seagrove and Deborah Kerr. That version remains one of Channel 4’s most successful dramas, with its final episode ranking as the highest-rated program in the channel’s history.
Production and Global Distribution
The new series is produced by The Forge, the same team behind The Buccaneers, with the script penned by writers Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley. The announcement of this adaptation followed the passing of Barbara Taylor Bradford in late 2024, adding a poignant context to the project.
BritBox’s agreement with Banijay Rights, which manages international sales, signals a robust interest from various global markets. Alongside the U.S. deal, the series has been acquired by multiple broadcasters, including Foxtel for Australia and TVNZ for New Zealand. Other buyers include NPO in the Netherlands, Cosmote in Greece, Cellcom TV Plus in Israel, and RUV in Iceland.
Matt Creasey, Executive Vice President of Sales, Acquisitions, and Coproductions at BritBox, expressed confidence in the series, stating, “BritBox is the perfect North American home for this bold new adaptation of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s classic story, which follows Emma Harte’s extraordinary rags-to-riches journey.” Creasey emphasized the potential for the drama to captivate a global audience, reflecting the strong sales performance by the Banijay Rights team.
The acquisition of A Woman of Substance coincides with the London TV Screenings, an event showcasing the latest in television programming, featuring over 40 sales houses including Banijay, All3Media, ITV Studios, and Fremantle. This event highlights the growing interest in high-quality television content on an international scale.
Viewers can anticipate the premiere of A Woman of Substance on Channel 4 later this year, with its U.S. release on BritBox yet to be announced. The series promises to engage audiences with its rich storytelling and dynamic performances, reinforcing the timeless appeal of Bradford’s narrative.
