Carrie Coon and Tracy Letts Ignite Broadway with “Bug”
Carrie Coon and Tracy Letts are making waves on Broadway with their latest collaboration in the play “Bug,” which opened recently at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in New York City. Coon, fresh off standout performances in “The Gilded Age” and “The White Lotus,” is embracing her new star status to take on a demanding lead role in this gripping exploration of paranoia and human connection.
Coon, who has seen her career trajectory shift dramatically, reflected on her recent success, stating, “I think I used to say, ‘The bottom of the B-List,’ but yeah, maybe we need to revise our assessment.” She noted that the landscape of theater has changed, emphasizing that success on platforms like “The White Lotus” is now almost essential for actors seeking Broadway opportunities. “In order to do a play on Broadway, you have to do ‘The White Lotus,’ or else you’re not allowed,” she remarked.
Letts, who not only writes but also stars in “Bug,” praised Coon’s extraordinary talent. He described her as someone with “ice water in her veins,” and emphasized her prowess on stage. “For the people who’ve only seen her do ‘Gilded Age’ or ‘White Lotus,’ they just don’t know what a stage animal she is,” he said.
The couple, married for over a decade, met while performing in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago in 2010. Their relationship blossomed amid the pressures of theater life, which Letts humorously noted can be difficult for those outside the profession to understand. “Civilians just don’t get it. It’s a hard life,” he commented.
Their partnership is built on mutual respect and honest communication. Letts highlighted the importance of truthfulness in their relationship, whether discussing wardrobe choices or performances. “She knows I’m gonna tell her the truth. When she puts on something and I say, ‘You look fantastic,’ she knows I’m not lying to her,” he shared.
Coon echoed this sentiment, stating, “If you have something to say, whether it’s praise or criticism, you know it’s the truth.” This level of trust has been crucial, especially as Coon navigated the demanding schedule of filming “The White Lotus” while raising their two young children. “We know when the undeniable thing comes along, and we’ll both make room for that to happen,” she explained.
As they embark on this new chapter together in “Bug,” both Coon and Letts find comfort and fulfillment in the theater. “This is where we’re most comfortable,” Letts said, emphasizing the unique gratification of storytelling in live performances. “You don’t get to do that when you make a film or TV show.”
Coon added that their artistic collaboration is not just a professional endeavor but a reaffirmation of their commitment to each other and their craft. “I needed somebody who understood what it means to be an artist in America,” Letts stated. Coon responded, “And I needed somebody who reminded me that it was important to be an artist, and that it was powerful, and necessary.”
As they continue to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of theater, Coon and Letts remain dedicated to their art and to each other, proving that their love for theater is as enduring as their love for one another.
