Christa Miller Stars in Apple TV’s Hit Comedy “Shrinking”
Christa Miller continues her successful television career with the Apple TV comedy series Shrinking, now entering its third season. In this unique show about unconventional therapists, Miller plays a complex neighbor to Jason Segel, who portrays a neurotic psychiatrist navigating the challenges of grief and family dynamics.
Miller’s Confidence in “Shrinking”
At 61, Miller has an impressive television history, spanning nine seasons on The Drew Carey Show, another nine on Scrubs, and six seasons with Cougar Town. Reflecting on her experience with Shrinking, she expressed early confidence in its potential during a recent Zoom interview. “When I read the pilot — and that was six or eight months before we were gonna do it — I told my agent, ‘No, I’m doing this show — it’s going to be picked up,’” she stated.
Following the first table read, Miller felt a strong sense of optimism. “I was sitting next to Harrison Ford and Jason, and we did the table read, and it killed!” The positive reception from executives at both Apple and Warner Bros. reassured her, as she noted, “They left there with no notes. I’ve never had a table read for a pilot that wasn’t like, five hours in notes.”
Character Development and Personal Connection
Miller’s character, Liz, is pivotal in supporting Segel’s character as he copes with his wife’s sudden death and the challenges of parenting a troubled teenage daughter. “Liz is so different than who I am. It’s very complicated for me to get in and work on her intention,” Miller explained. “But also really fun in a tricky way, like figuring out a puzzle.”
She describes Liz as someone who is evolving, learning to open up, and striving for personal growth. “I root for her because I think she’s really striving to be better,” Miller said. Liz’s unfiltered nature and tendency to meddle in others’ lives add humor and complexity to the series. “Which would drive me crazy,” she admitted, “but luckily, she’s funny.”
The third season of Shrinking premieres on March 6, 2024, featuring a special one-hour episode. As the show continues to develop, Miller emphasizes the collaborative effort required to create compelling episodes, stating, “It takes a lot of effort to write these incredible episodes. So, we’ve got to hope that the writers are up for it. Because we are having a blast.”
Miller’s marriage to Bill Lawrence, the creator behind Scrubs and co-creator of several popular shows, including Ted Lasso, adds a unique dynamic to her career. As Shrinking moves forward, audiences can look forward to more laughter and emotional depth in this beloved series.
