“Clue” Takes Stage in Syracuse: A Whodunit for All Ages
The Landmark Theatre in Syracuse will host the theatrical adaptation of Clue from October 28 to November 1, 2023. This production transforms the venue into the iconic Boddy Mansion, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in a comedic whodunit inspired by the beloved Hasbro game and the classic 1985 film. Tickets are priced starting at $43 and are available for purchase online.
The play revolves around a group of six enigmatic guests who gather for a dinner party hosted by the blackmailing Mr. Boddy. When he is found murdered, it becomes a race against time for the characters and the audience to uncover the murderer, the location of the crime, and the weapon used. The production promises not only a thrilling mystery but also offers multiple alternative endings, enhancing the interactive experience for viewers.
Actor TJ Lamando, who portrays Mr. Green, highlights the unique aspects of this adaptation. “There are a lot of surprises that are not in the movie, and many elements that tie specifically to the board game,” Lamando explained. His enthusiasm for the project stems from a childhood viewing of the film with his father, who was a fan of the star-studded cast, including Tim Curry and Michael McKean.
In his approach to Mr. Green, Lamando emphasizes the character’s timid and anxious nature, which adds depth to the role. “The breakdown describes Mr. Green as a rule follower, and I carry that with me as I play the character,” he stated. This portrayal creates a sense of bubbling tension, especially in a murder mystery setting where nerves can lead to unexpected outcomes.
The ensemble cast brings together a variety of personalities, creating engaging interactions that heighten the play’s comedic elements. Lamando noted that the other characters often amplify Mr. Green’s anxiety, making the dynamics even more entertaining. “Actors try to find moments that build those relationships so that even if just one or two people in the audience notice, it creates a connection.”
The production of Clue is designed to appeal to audiences of all ages, offering a nostalgic experience for those familiar with the game and movie while remaining accessible to new viewers. Lamando remarked on the unifying nature of the story, stating, “It’s rare to have a show that is great for all ages. Everyone loves a whodunit, and it’s undeniable when you get to watch it.”
In conjunction with the opening of this production, Broadway in Syracuse is hosting a scavenger hunt across downtown Syracuse. Participants can scan QR codes at local businesses to collect clues, with the chance to win two tickets to the opening night of Clue, a basket of candy, and a Clue board game. The scavenger hunt concludes on October 26, providing an exciting lead-up to the show’s debut.
As the anticipation builds for this theatrical event, Clue promises to deliver a lively mix of mystery, humor, and audience engagement, making it a must-see for theatre enthusiasts and families alike.
