Congress Cuts Medicaid Funding, Impacting Millions in Louisiana

The recent passage of significant cuts to Medicaid, part of the legislation known as The Big Beautiful Bill, has raised serious concerns about the welfare of vulnerable populations in Louisiana. These reductions, projected to affect funding over the next ten years, could impact approximately 1.5 million children and adults in the state.

According to former state Senate president Randy L. Ewing, these cuts undermine a critical moral obligation of government. He cites a poignant quote from former Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, stating, “The moral test of government is how it treats those in the dawn of life, the children; those in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy, and the handicapped.” Ewing argues that the government is failing this test by reducing support for essential health services.

In Louisiana, 42 percent of children rely on Medicaid funding through the Children’s Health Insurance Program (LA CHIP). Additionally, around 400,000 seniors and individuals with disabilities depend on Medicaid for their health care, including many who reside in nursing homes. The proposed cuts are justified by claims of reducing waste and abuse within the system; however, Ewing emphasizes that providing health care for these populations is neither wasteful nor fiscally irresponsible.

The implications of these Medicaid cuts are grave. As Ewing notes, the support provided through Medicaid is crucial for those who cannot afford alternative health care options. Many families, including those with children who face chronic health issues, depend entirely on this assistance to meet their medical needs.

Ewing is calling on concerned citizens to engage with their representatives in Congress, urging them to fully fund Medicaid for Louisiana’s vulnerable populations. “Providing health care for Louisiana’s children, elderly, and disabled is not waste. It is both morally and fiscally responsible,” he asserts.
