DJ Akademiks Critiques Drake and Kendrick’s Feud for Hip-Hop Stagnation
DJ Akademiks has voiced concerns about the impact of the well-known feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar on the progress of hip-hop. During a livestream event, he suggested that this ongoing rivalry may hinder the genre’s advancement by limiting new narratives and storytelling opportunities.
According to Akademiks, the feud generated significant media attention and revenue during its peak. “During the Drake vs Kendrick beef, numbers went crazy, biggest money period of my career,” he stated. He noted that this phenomenon likely affected other media outlets as well, resulting in a focus on the feud long after it had ended. DJ Akademiks emphasized that hip-hop thrives on storytelling, and the continuous recycling of this conflict could obstruct the emergence of fresh talent and innovative moments in the industry.
In previous discussions, Akademiks has consistently highlighted the long-term implications of the Drake and Kendrick rivalry. In an October interview with VladTV, he advised Drake against mentioning Kendrick in his upcoming album, titled ICEMAN. He expressed that engaging in further disputes with other artists would not be beneficial for Drake’s career, as it could be seen as a waste of energy.
“When I say leave him alone, we’ve got to leave the moment. There’s no more direct engagement. It’s over,” Akademiks explained. He suggested that the future approach should resemble that of Jay-Z, who is known for indirect jabs rather than overt confrontations.
He further asserted that, following their past battles, it would be wise for Drake to refrain from engaging with other rappers altogether. “When you look at Drake’s career as a whole, why would he engage? It’s over,” he concluded. “He’s already solidified.”
Currently, Drake’s new album does not have an official release date, although it is anticipated to be released sometime in 2026. As the hip-hop landscape evolves, the effects of the feud between these two prominent artists may continue to resonate, influencing both media narratives and the careers of emerging musicians.
