Dolby Enhances Peacock’s Sports Broadcasts with New Audio-Visual Features

The American technology company Dolby is set to enhance the viewing experience for sports fans on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, through the introduction of new audio and visual features. The upgrades, which include Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, will first be rolled out across live sports events such as Sunday Night Football, NBA games, and Major League Baseball matches. This initiative was announced earlier this week.

A study conducted by Dolby revealed that a significant majority of sports enthusiasts prioritize high-quality video and audio. Specifically, 90 percent of respondents stated that video quality that replicates the in-person experience is essential, while 85 percent expressed the same sentiment regarding audio quality. The expectation is that further enhancements, such as Dolby Vision 2 and Dolby AC-4, will soon be available for non-sports programming as well, according to sources familiar with the plans.

Introducing Enhanced Features for Sports Viewing

The upgrades are not exclusive to Peacock; however, NBCUniversal is the first streaming service to implement these changes, which are anticipated to reach the market ahead of others. Dolby Vision 2 promises to deliver brighter and more vivid colors, enhancing the viewing experience significantly. This improvement is particularly welcome following past events such as the finale of the popular series Game of Thrones, which faced criticism for its dark visuals.

In addition, Dolby AC-4 will introduce various levels of dialogue enhancement. This feature addresses a common issue among viewers, as a recent study by the Associated Press found that 60 percent of adult television viewers have relied on closed captions to follow their shows. During the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, both enhancements were showcased, highlighting their potential benefits for audiences.

Tailoring Audio to Viewer Preferences

The discussion surrounding audio mixing gained attention when David Bohunek, NBCUniversal’s Senior Vice President of Global Video Engineering, recounted a halftime call during Peacock’s inaugural exclusive NFL game. Differing opinions arose between NBCU and NFL executives regarding audio levels; some preferred louder commentary from Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth, while others wanted to amplify crowd noise.

Bohunek noted that with the new AC-4 technology, viewers can customize their audio experience through a simple interface. “With AC-4 and the personalization of the audio, we can let the customers do what they prefer,” he explained, suggesting that users might even have the option to turn off commentary entirely. This proposition has sparked a range of reactions online, although a Peacock representative clarified that completely disabling commentary is “not something NBCU is seriously considering.”

As Dolby continues to innovate, the integration of these features into Peacock’s offerings marks a significant step towards improving the overall experience for sports fans. With upcoming enhancements set to redefine how viewers consume live sports, the industry anticipates a shift that could set new standards for streaming services.
