DraftKings Explores Oscar Odds Amid Rise of Prediction Markets
The 98th Academy Awards have concluded, navigating various challenges within the entertainment industry, including declining viewership and the emergence of new entertainment platforms. One notable trend is the growing interest in prediction markets, where individuals place bets on Oscar outcomes. Johnny Avello, director of race and sports operations at DraftKings, believes this shift could positively impact engagement with the Oscars.
Avello, an avid movie enthusiast and seasoned oddsmaker, highlighted how DraftKings is setting odds for the Oscars, a process that differs significantly from traditional sports betting. In an interview with Covers.com, he discussed how prediction markets can enhance the platform and sustain interest in the Academy Awards.
While DraftKings had been accepting bets on the Oscars prior to launching its prediction market in late 2025, Avello emphasized the importance of understanding audience trends. He described the Academy Awards as the “Super Bowl” of the film industry, with bettors primarily focusing on six key categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director. These categories dominate the betting activity on the platform.
Setting odds for the Oscars is a unique challenge. Unlike sports events, oddsmakers must consider passionate fans who engage deeply with cinema. Avello explained that they monitor viewer trends, award wins, and shifts in public interest. “We make adjustments on how they’re wagered initially. And then, when the award season starts around November or December, we make more adjustments as they win certain awards. Some awards carry more weight than others,” he noted.
The rise of prediction markets reflects a broader trend within the gambling industry, suggesting these platforms could increasingly shape how audiences interact with cinematic events. Avello’s insights illuminate a fascinating intersection of film and betting, revealing how data analysis and cultural engagement can drive business in this evolving landscape.
As the film industry continues to adapt to changing viewer habits, the role of platforms like DraftKings in shaping Oscar outcomes is likely to expand. With the Academy Awards serving as a focal point, prediction markets may redefine how audiences engage with cinema, adding a layer of excitement to an event steeped in tradition.
