DWTS Season 34 Finale Unveils Bold Competition Format Changes

The finale of Season 34 of Dancing with the Stars will introduce a significant change to its competition format, promising an intense conclusion to the season. Scheduled to air on November 25, 2023, the finale will feature an unprecedented three rounds of competition, a first for the series.

During the November 18 episode, co-host Alfonso Ribeiro revealed the new format to viewers, stating, “Next week, we’re taking over all of ABC in primetime with our most demanding season finale in the history of the show.” The new rounds include Instant Dances, Make-or-Break Freestyle, and a Judges’ Choice round, each designed to elevate the stakes for the contestants.

The first round, Instant Dances, will challenge the stars to perform to a surprise song live, testing their adaptability and skill. The Make-or-Break Freestyle will allow couples to showcase their creativity without restrictions, significantly impacting the public vote. Lastly, the Judges’ Choice round will see the panel select a routine or dance style for the competing couples, adding another layer of anticipation.

As the competition heats up, the semifinals have demonstrated the remarkable talent this season. Multiple couples achieved perfect scores, showcasing their abilities in front of the judges. Carrie Ann Inaba commended Robert Irwin and Witney Carson for their jive to “Baby I’m a Star,” calling it “insane—so clean, so sharp, so buoyant, so fun!”

Likewise, Alix Earle and Val Chmerkovskiy received a perfect score for their Viennese waltz to “Purple Rain.” Judge Derek Hough praised Earle’s transformation into a skilled dancer, expressing confidence in her progression to the finals.

Meanwhile, Elaine Hendrix and Alan Bersten left a lasting impression with their performance set to “When Doves Cry,” prompting Bruno Tonioli to describe it as “a regal performance… Majestic.”
