Elizabethton Mourns the Loss of Beloved Community Figure Betty Jean Carr

Betty Jean Carr, a cherished member of the Elizabethton community, passed away on October 16, 2025, at the age of 96. A lifelong resident of Elizabethton, Tennessee, she was known for her warmth and dedication to those around her. Betty’s departure marks the end of an era for many who knew her over the decades.

Born to the late James Lawrence Gouge and Gladys (Clark) Gouge, Betty Carr was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Carr, and several siblings, including Martha June Barbre and James L. Gouge. She is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law: Ronnie (Kimberly) Gouge, Gary (Cathy) Gouge, and Glen (JoAnn) Gouge, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and close friends, including David and Donna Asher.

A Life of Service and Community Engagement

A graduate of Elizabethton High School, Betty also attended East Tennessee State College. For over 55 years, she greeted customers with a friendly smile at local shops, including Watson’s and Peebles. Her commitment to service extended beyond retail; she was a devoted member of Hunter First Baptist Church, where she participated actively in church activities during her later years.

Betty was an avid traveler, journeying to various countries and returning home with treasured collector’s plates. In her spare time, she enjoyed solving puzzles and playing Mexican dominoes, sharing joyous moments with family and friends.

Celebration of Life and Final Farewell

A Celebration of Life service will be held on October 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Memorial Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Stephen Nauman and Pastor Jon Barnett. Following the service, a graveside ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. at Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section). Music for the service will feature performances by Patty Hodge and Glen Gouge. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the day of the service. Those wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to arrive at the cemetery by 12:45 p.m. to participate in the graveside service.
