Emily Robb Launches Groundbreaking Soundtrack for Sci-Fi Short

Philadelphia-based experimental guitarist Emily Robb is stepping into new realms with her upcoming soundtrack album for the science fiction short film, The Space Between Attack and Decay. Scheduled for release on January 23, 2024, the album showcases Robb’s distinctive sound alongside the imaginative vision of Philadelphia filmmaker Jessica Kourkounis.

This project marks a significant milestone for Robb, as it is her first time creating music specifically tailored for a visual narrative. Kourkounis, who collaborated with screenwriter Richie Fravel, recognized Robb’s unique musical style and approached her several years ago to contribute to the film’s score. Embracing the challenge, Robb expressed enthusiasm about exploring this new medium. “I just thought: OK, I’m just going to come up with different things and see if any of these vibes stick with them,” she stated.

Innovative Collaboration and Unique Soundscapes

Since releasing her debut solo record, How to Moonwalk, in 2021, Robb has established herself as a prominent figure within Philadelphia’s underground music scene. Her work is characterized by emotive and raw guitar performances, often exploring monolithic drone and sustained cycles of sound. In her collaboration with Kourkounis, Robb faced immediate challenges, as the first scene for which she composed music had yet to be filmed. Relying solely on the script, she had to envision the actors’ movements.

The resulting tracks highlight her innovative approach. “Dance Music,” for instance, begins with an acoustic guitar before shifting into a feedback-rich rock framework, while “Shiny Sister Theme” evokes a vast, desolate landscape reminiscent of classic spaghetti westerns. In contrast, “Hell Music” creates a sense of existential dread through its shimmering drone and unsettling feedback.

Robb incorporated various Foley sounds, including environmental noises and textural elements, to enrich the album’s auditory experience. She collaborated with Kourkounis to record unique sounds, such as bubbling water and creaking floors, enhancing the film’s surreal atmosphere.

A Celebration of Creativity and Community

Robb views her involvement in the film as a rewarding learning experience, stating, “It was really fun to see how it all came together.” She expressed a desire to continue exploring soundtrack work, emphasizing the freedom that comes from stepping outside her usual creative boundaries.

The film has garnered attention at various festivals, winning accolades such as Best Experimental Film at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival and Best Short Film at the Roswell Shorts Indie Film Festival. Starring Boris McGiver and narrated by James McAvoy, the film has resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Robb is deeply committed to the DIY ethos of the music community. She encourages aspiring musicians to focus on creativity rather than conventional pathways to success. “If you want to play guitar, just pick up a guitar and play,” she advised.

On January 31, 2024, she will celebrate the album’s release with a performance at Solar Myth in South Philadelphia. Joining her on stage will be fellow musicians from the underground scene, including Richie Charles and Dan Provenzano, as part of the newly formed ER Band. The event will also feature an opening act by the band Walnut Brain, along with a screening of Kourkounis’ film.
