Helen Mirren Celebrates Jane Fonda’s Bold Outlook at L’Oréal Event
During the L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Celebration in Los Angeles on December 2, 2023, actress Helen Mirren praised fellow actress Jane Fonda for her “radical and controversial” perspective on life. Mirren, who has had a distinguished career spanning over six decades, highlighted Fonda’s remarkable journey and unwavering commitment to various causes.
Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly, Mirren shared, “One of my Women of Worth is actually another L’Oréal ambassador, and that’s Jane Fonda. I’ve always thought what an absolute remarkable life she’s had, with an incredible expanse of different things. Always constantly with energy, commitment, radical, controversial but always committed to life. She’s definitely one of my Women of Worth.”
Honoring Women’s Contributions
The event marked the 20th anniversary of the Women of Worth program, which recognizes ten exceptional women each year for their contributions to society. This year’s honorees included Yasmine Arrington Brooks, Amy Bowers Cordalis, Mizpah Brown-Rich, Keely Cat-Wells, Sloane Davidson, Lynne B Hughes, Anita Ravi, Cristina Rodriguez, Gloria Umanah, and Olivia Zhang. The celebration took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and featured several notable L’Oréal ambassadors, including Andie MacDowell, Kendall Jenner, Aja Naomi King, Gillian Anderson, Ariana Greenblatt, and Heidi Klum.
Mirren also opened up about her own struggles with confidence, stating, “I don’t have confidence. I have absolutely no confidence whatsoever. But I pretend I do. It’s always been that way. It’s just a big act.” Her candid remarks resonated with many in attendance, highlighting the often-hidden challenges faced by public figures.
Upcoming Projects and Directorial Debuts
In addition to her accolades at the event, Mirren is set to star in Kate Winslet’s directorial debut, titled Goodbye June. The film, which will be released in select theaters on December 12, 2023, and stream on Netflix starting Christmas Eve, features a powerful narrative about a family grappling with their mother’s terminal illness. The cast also includes Toni Collette, Andrea Riseborough, and Johnny Flynn.
Winslet expressed her excitement about the project, explaining how her son, Joe Anders, wrote the original script during a screenwriting course. “At the end of the course, he said to me, ‘I’ve written this thing, and you know it’s probably not great, but would you read it?’ I read it, and I realized it was very much not and could definitely be a film,” Winslet shared.
She reflected on her motivation to direct, stating, “I found myself in a moment of realization, having spent so much of my life advocating and trying to elevate other women in male-dominated spaces. I did have a moment of thinking, ‘Well, who am I really if I’m not actually doing that thing to try and change the culture?’ So in my 50s, I did it!”
The L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Celebration not only honored remarkable women but also showcased the ongoing commitment of its ambassadors to empower and uplift others, a theme that resonates deeply in both Mirren’s and Fonda’s careers.
