HGTV Cancels “Rehab Addict” After Host’s Racial Slur Controversy
HGTV has canceled the home renovation series Rehab Addict following a controversy involving its host, Nicole Curtis. The decision came after leaked footage surfaced, showing Curtis using a racial slur during filming. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the values promoted by the network.
In an official statement to Variety, HGTV expressed its disapproval, stating, “HGTV was recently made aware of an offensive racial comment made during the filming of Rehab Addict. Not only is language like this hurtful and disappointing to our viewers, partners, and employees – it does not align with the values of HGTV. Accordingly, we have removed the series from all HGTV platforms.” The network reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect and inclusion.
The controversy erupted when RadarOnline released behind-the-scenes footage in which Curtis appeared frustrated and used the racial slur while discussing a project. Her immediate reaction following the comment indicated shock, prompting widespread backlash from fans and the public alike.
As a result of the incident, Curtis made an “executive decision” to shelve the remaining episodes of Season 9. The season had premiered its first two episodes in July 2025, with plans to continue airing on February 12, 2025. Those plans were subsequently canceled by the network.
In response to the controversy, Curtis issued a statement to TMZ, clarifying her stance on the matter. “I want to be clear: the word in question is wrong and not part of my vocabulary and never has been, and I apologize to everyone,” she said. She also reflected on her time with the show, stating, “I’m grateful for the 15-year journey we’ve shared. It’s been a meaningful chapter, but my focus isn’t on my career. My focus, at this moment, is rightfully on my relationships and my community – the people who truly know my character and where my heart is.”
Originally launched on the DIY Network, Rehab Addict transitioned to HGTV in 2014, showcasing Curtis’s work in restoring old homes. The show has garnered a loyal following, but this latest incident has led to its abrupt conclusion.
As the situation develops, the implications for Curtis and HGTV remain significant, highlighting the ongoing conversation about accountability in media and the standards expected from public figures.
