Italian Guitar Virtuoso Matteo Mancuso Dazzles Santa Barbara Audience
Italian guitar virtuoso Matteo Mancuso captivated audiences at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara on March 12, 2024. Known for his exceptional technique and fluidity, Mancuso delivered an electrifying performance, despite facing the unusual challenge of two broken guitar strings during the show. His light-hearted reaction to the mishaps, stating, “This never happens to me,” showcased his engaging personality and professionalism.
Mancuso, who has gained recognition for his unique approach that blends classical guitar techniques with flamenco fingerstyle, performed a mix of original compositions and reimagined classics. Accompanied by bassist Riccardo Oliva and drummer Gianluca Pellerito, the trio demonstrated a seamless synergy that highlighted their musical prowess and youthful energy. The intimate setting of the Lobero provided a perfect backdrop for their intricate sound.
Dynamic Performance with a Fusion Twist
The evening attracted a diverse crowd, including electric guitar enthusiasts, progressive rock fans, and jazz aficionados. Many attendees, including those who had pivoted from a canceled concert featuring Terence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane, were eager to experience Mancuso’s captivating style. His performance was particularly notable as jazz-rock fusion, especially characterized by fast guitar work, is a rarity at the Lobero.
Mancuso’s influences were apparent throughout the night, drawing comparisons to legendary fusion guitarists such as Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, and Al Di Meola. He paid homage to these icons with renditions of their works, including a custom arrangement of Chick Corea‘s classic “Spain” and Holdsworth’s “Chicken.” The show also featured tracks from his upcoming album, Route 96, and his 2023 release, The Journey.
One of the highlights of the performance was Mancuso’s tribute to the late Jeff Beck. He performed “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” a piece renowned for its emotional depth, showcasing his mastery of the glissando vibrato bar, a technique that Beck famously employed. The energy shifted with the headbanging jazz-rock number “Black Centurion,” underscoring Mancuso’s versatility and creative range.
Impressive Musicianship and Future Prospects
The evening was not just about the music; it was a display of Mancuso’s extraordinary technical skills. His fingerwork left attendees in awe, evoking a sense of wonder about his abilities. The intricate patterns and rapid-fire sequences he produced on stage were a testament to his dedication and training as a musician.
While the trio utilized backing tracks, which some in the audience found limiting, the live performance was rich with vibrant energy and skillful improvisation. Mancuso’s ability to blend influences while maintaining his unique voice has set the stage for a promising career.
Fans hope to see more of Matteo Mancuso as he continues to explore new musical landscapes. His recent performance at the Lobero Theatre not only showcased his talent but also hinted at a bright future in the world of music. Santa Barbara may well remain a significant stop on his journey as he builds upon his already impressive legacy.
