James L. Brooks Returns with Mixed Reception for “Ella McCay”
Renowned filmmaker James L. Brooks makes his return to directing with the new film Ella McCay, set to hit theaters on December 12, 2023. After a 15-year hiatus from the director’s chair, Brooks aims to revisit the complexities of personal and political life through the character of Ella, portrayed by Emma Mackey. Despite the strong pedigree of its creator, the film has garnered a tepid response, reflecting a struggle to find a cohesive narrative.
In 2008, Ella McCay serves as the lieutenant governor of an unnamed state, poised to ascend to the governor’s office following the appointment of Governor Bill, played by Albert Brooks, to a position in the president’s Cabinet. However, Ella’s journey is complicated by a range of personal challenges, including her needy husband, Ryan (played by Jack Lowden), her agoraphobic brother, Casey (portrayed by Spike Fearn), and her father, Eddie (played by Woody Harrelson), whose infidelities add further strain.
Throughout the film, Ella’s optimism shines, supported by her aunt, Helen (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), her assistant, Estelle (voiced by Julie Kavner), and her police escort, Trooper Nash (played by Kumail Nanjiani). The narrative spans several days, exploring the pressures of governance while interweaving Ella’s personal life.
Brooks’ storytelling approach, however, has drawn criticism for its lack of focus. What begins as a straightforward narrative about Ella’s governance soon diverges into subplots that dilute the main story. The interactions with her brother and father, while crucial to Ella’s life, receive minimal screen time, leaving their motivations and significance underdeveloped. Additionally, a subplot involving Casey’s attempts to reconcile with his girlfriend, Susan (played by Ayo Edebiri), further complicates the storyline without adding substantial value.
The film’s political backdrop seems to suggest a Democratic alignment, particularly through Ella’s initiatives aimed at assisting mothers in need. Yet, Brooks fails to clarify Ella’s objectives, leaving the audience questioning the political relevance of her actions. A scene depicting Ella boring her fellow lawmakers also raises eyebrows, presenting a characterization that contrasts with her role as a protagonist.
Despite these narrative shortcomings, the performances of Mackey and Curtis stand out. Mackey, recognized for her role in the Netflix series Sex Education, delivers a compelling portrayal that maintains Ella’s likability even amidst a faltering script. Curtis, known for her more flamboyant performances in recent years, adopts a more subdued approach, providing emotional support to Ella. Their dynamic is a highlight of the film, showcasing the strength of female characters.
Brooks has historically prioritized strong female performances, and this film is no exception. Kavner’s role as the narrator, though arguably unnecessary, provides some of the film’s most humorous moments. Conversely, Harrelson’s character lacks depth, while Fearn’s portrayal of Casey is often grating. Lowden’s performance does not fare much better, attributed in part to the limitations of his character.
While James L. Brooks has produced numerous acclaimed television shows and films over his extensive career, Ella McCay does not reach the heights of his earlier work. Nonetheless, it serves as a platform for Mackey, who demonstrates her capability as a leading actress, elevating a film that might otherwise struggle to engage its audience.
