Jason Bateman Questions Fans’ Affection for ‘Zootopia’s Nick Wilde
Jason Bateman recently expressed his bewilderment over the growing affection fans have for his character, Nick Wilde, from the animated film franchise, *Zootopia*. During a segment on a talk show, Bateman was asked about the intense online discussions regarding his character’s appeal, specifically referencing a Reddit thread where fans debate whether Nick Wilde is “hot.” His response combined a sense of pride with a touch of confusion.
In the interview, co-star Ginnifer Goodwin prompted Bateman by mentioning the Reddit conversation. “Nick Wilde has a Reddit thread full of people debating whether he’s hot or not,” Goodwin said, to which Bateman confirmed, “This is true. My daughters told me this. It’s very weird. I guess it’s flattering.” He further questioned, “Where did it come from though? I guess, are they saying the fox itself is handsome?”
Goodwin elaborated on the reasons behind the character’s appeal, attributing it to a combination of “the attitude, the voice and the eyes.” Bateman smirked in agreement, while both he and Goodwin acknowledged the popularity of WildeHopps, a fan-created ship that romantically pairs Nick Wilde with Judy Hopps, his co-lead in the film.
While Bateman found the fan interest amusing, Goodwin expressed her uncertainty about the concept of Nick being seen as the “perfect boyfriend.” “It’s very confusing for me,” she joked. This playful banter highlights the disconnect between the actors and some of the more passionate parts of the fan community.
The quirky fascination with anthropomorphic characters is not unique to *Zootopia*. Over the years, various animated figures have ignited similar fervor among fans. These characters often transcend their narratives, leading to discussions and fan art that explore relationships and personality traits beyond what the original storylines present.
As anticipation builds for the sequel, *Zootopia 2*, set to release in March 2024, Bateman and Goodwin prepare to once again voice their beloved characters. The film promises to delve deeper into the dynamics between Nick and Judy, who have become cultural icons since the original *Zootopia* hit theaters in 2016 and won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The upcoming sequel aims to capture the same heart and humor that resonated with audiences in the first film, while introducing new themes and characters to expand the rich world of Zootopia. With a voice cast that includes Idris Elba and Quinta Brunson, excitement continues to grow among fans eager for more adventures in this animated universe.
Despite the mixed feelings from its stars about fan interpretations, the enduring appeal of Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps ensures that these characters will remain a topic of conversation, both online and off, as *Zootopia 2* approaches its release.
