Jewish Rapper Kosha Dillz Reflects on Hanukkah Performances Amidst Turmoil
Jewish rapper and filmmaker Kosha Dillz, known offstage as Rami Even-Esh, has been navigating a unique set of challenges while performing during Hanukkah this year. Following the tragic events of October 7, 2023, which marked a significant shift for the Jewish community, Dillz reflects on the emotional weight of his performances and the enduring impact of music in times of grief.
Hanukkah typically represents a festive time for Jewish people, akin to a “Coachella Week” during the Christmas season. Dillz’s songs, including “The Hanukkah Song” featuring Nissim Black and “Dreidel Dreidel,” have found their way into middle schools and family gatherings, particularly through social media channels like WhatsApp. Yet, this year, the atmosphere has shifted dramatically.
With venues often shuttered and public events facing security concerns, Dillz describes a packed schedule of performances. These range from late-night “latke vodka” shows to high-end kosher comedy events in Queens, culminating in his headlining performance at Hannukcon in New York City. He notes the dichotomy of performing at community menorah lightings, a staple of Hanukkah celebrations, while grappling with the reality of recent violence, including a tragic attack in Bondi Beach where 15 people lost their lives.
The Chabad movement, characterized by its outreach and community service, has remained a crucial part of Jewish life worldwide. With approximately 90,000 members globally, Chabad houses exist in diverse locations, from India to Anchorage, Alaska. Dillz emphasizes that these community-focused organizations are particularly vulnerable, given their visibility and commitment to spreading joy through traditions such as lighting Hanukkah candles.
Following the events of October 7, the demand for performances at grief-related events surged. Jewish musicians are being called upon to offer messages of inspiration and resilience at gatherings where the community seeks solace. Dillz highlights the struggle of fostering joy amidst sorrow, stating, “How do we navigate making people happy and party after being murdered?”
His recent performances have been marked by heightened security. At a December 14 event for Chabad of Loudoun in Ashburn, Virginia, Dillz performed in freezing temperatures with police protection, as community members expressed fear over potential threats. This stark contrast to the usual celebratory atmosphere has left an indelible mark on both performers and attendees.
On December 15, Dillz took the stage at Brooklyn Borough Hall alongside the band Zusha, with a turnout of nearly 500 people. Despite the crowd, the presence of numerous police officers and security personnel raised questions about safety at events that should be joyful. “Does 50 Cent have four armed guards with guns on stage? Does Wu-Tang Clan have that?” he rhetorically asked, underscoring the extraordinary circumstances facing Jewish performers today.
Dillz also shared poignant moments with audience members who had personal connections to the recent violence, revealing the human impact of these tragedies. He continues to find ways to inspire hope through his music, engaging with communities even when the atmosphere is heavy with sorrow.
While the challenges are undeniable, the resilience of the Jewish community shines through. Dillz’s commitment to perform, even in the face of adversity, reflects a determination to uphold tradition and foster connection. He encourages fellow musicians to stand in solidarity, asking, “Will you say something for your fellow acts and include them in regular music industry opportunities?”
As Hanukkah progresses, Kosha Dillz remains a beacon of hope, using his platform to uplift and unite a community navigating complex emotions. His upcoming film, “Bring The Family Home,” has also gained attention, with nearly $100,000 raised through crowdfunding. As he balances performances with filmmaking, Dillz continues to advocate for joy and resilience through his music, embracing the spirit of Hanukkah even in the most challenging times.
