Menemsha Films Acquires North American Rights to ‘The Soundman’
Menemsha Films has secured the North American distribution rights for the Belgian drama The Soundman, following its successful U.S. premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January 2024. This acquisition highlights Menemsha’s commitment to bringing international cinema to North American audiences, particularly films that tackle significant historical narratives.
Set against the backdrop of the impending German invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands, The Soundman delves into the experiences of Belgian Jews faced with the harrowing decision to either remain in their homeland or escape into uncertainty. The narrative unfolds through a poignant love story intertwined with the atmosphere of the broadcast radio world, offering a unique perspective on a tumultuous time in history.
Plot Overview and Key Characters
The film is set in Brussels’ iconic Maison de la Radio Flagey, which served as the home for the National Institute for Radio Broadcasting (NIR) during this period. The story follows Elza, portrayed by Femke Vanhove, a young actress making her debut in radio drama. She encounters Berre, a talented soundman and foley expert known for his exceptional auditory skills. Their romance blossoms amid a backdrop of encroaching danger, capturing the tension and uncertainty of the era. The cast also includes notable actors such as Koen De Bouw, known for his role in Professor T, and Peter Van den Begin, famous for his performance in The King of the Belgians.
This film marks a significant return for director Frank Van Passel, who has previously garnered attention with works such as the Cannes breakout Mannekin Pis and the acclaimed Villa des Roses. More recently, he has been recognized for his contribution to the mystery thriller series Moresnet.
Production and Distribution Highlights
The acquisition deal was negotiated by Menemsha’s Neil A. Friedman and Tine Klint of LevelK, demonstrating a strategic collaboration aimed at expanding the reach of international films in North America. The Soundman is produced by Caviar, a production company known for its work on critically acclaimed films such as Sound of Metal, The Rider, and War Pony.
With its compelling narrative and strong performances, The Soundman is poised to resonate with audiences and critics alike. As Menemsha Films prepares for its release, the film stands as a testament to the power of storytelling, particularly in the face of historical challenges. The combination of a rich historical context and a deeply personal love story ensures that it will be a noteworthy addition to the North American film landscape.
