Metaphor ReFantazio Director Aims for Series Success, No Rush on Sequel
The director of Metaphor ReFantazio, Katsura Hashino, has expressed a desire for the new role-playing game (RPG) to become a cornerstone of Atlus, similar to the well-established Persona and Shin Megami Tensei franchises. Despite this ambition, Hashino is taking a cautious approach regarding the development of a sequel, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that it meets the expectations of fans.
Released in October 2024, Metaphor ReFantazio has garnered positive reviews for its engaging turn-based combat system and features reminiscent of the Persona series, such as in-game monthly calendars and character development through social interactions. According to an interview with Game Informer (as reported by GamesRadar), Hashino stated, “When we set out to create [Metaphor ReFantazio], we had the ambitions of hoping to cultivate this game into one of our brands within Atlus, like a pillar.”
Hashino reinforced his commitment to quality over speed by explaining that the success of the game does not automatically warrant a swift sequel. “Just because we had a certain level of success, we don’t want to just jump on that and quickly put out something as a sequel,” he noted. His focus is on creating a continuation that honors the values embedded in the original game and provides meaningful content for players.
The game has already made a significant mark in the industry, winning awards for Best RPG, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2024, and receiving a nomination for Game of the Year. While the possibility of a second installment remains open, Atlus is currently turning its attention to the next highly anticipated release: Persona 6. As the Persona series approaches its 30th anniversary next year, developers have hinted at upcoming announcements for 2026, including more details about a Persona 4 Remake.
This careful strategy reflects Atlus’s commitment to delivering quality experiences that resonate with fans while also expanding its portfolio of successful franchises. The future of Metaphor ReFantazio appears promising, but the emphasis on thoughtful development may set a new standard for how sequels are approached in the gaming industry.
