Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck’s AI Company InterPositive for Creative Innovation
Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an artificial intelligence firm founded by Ben Affleck, just days after withdrawing from the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery. This acquisition marks a strategic move for Netflix, which aims to enhance its filmmaking capabilities through advanced AI tools designed specifically for the creative industry. The deal was finalized on a date in March 2024, integrating InterPositive’s 16 employees into Netflix’s existing workforce.
The acquisition underscores Netflix’s commitment to utilizing AI in a way that improves content quality rather than simply reducing production costs. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos emphasized this vision, stating, “There’s a better business and a bigger business in making content 10% better than it is making it 50% cheaper.” As Netflix embarks on this new venture, it faces scrutiny from creative unions currently engaged in negotiations with studios and streaming platforms, including Netflix. These talks aim to prevent a recurrence of the strikes witnessed in 2023, which were partly sparked by concerns over the impact of AI on the industry.
While Netflix has not disclosed the financial terms of the acquisition, the AI sector has seen a surge in valuations, with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic leading the way. Emerging firms such as Luma AI and Runway have also garnered significant attention and funding, reflecting the growing interest in AI applications in entertainment.
The relationship between Netflix and Affleck has deepened over the years, culminating in this acquisition. Earlier in March 2024, the two reaffirmed their partnership by establishing a first-look deal with Artists Equity, Affleck’s production company. Discussions regarding InterPositive began last fall when Affleck first shared his vision for the AI venture with Netflix executives. He has expressed a keen interest in the potential of AI since 2022, initially feeling uneasy about the technology’s role in filmmaking. Through his exploration of AI, Affleck aimed to ensure that human creativity remains at the forefront of storytelling.
InterPositive is focused on developing tools that protect the essence of storytelling, emphasizing the importance of human judgment in filmmaking. Affleck stated, “We also need to preserve what makes storytelling human, which is judgment.” The technology created by InterPositive does not rely on text-to-video prompts but instead uses a curated repository of visual data recorded by human actors in controlled environments.
The nature of this acquisition means that InterPositive’s technology will be exclusive to Netflix, differing from the licensing agreements typical in the entertainment industry. For instance, Disney recently opted for a licensing agreement with OpenAI, allowing access to specific intellectual property in exchange for an investment. This reflects a cautious approach to AI integration in content creation.
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria reinforced the company’s commitment to the creative community, stating, “Our relationship has always been grounded in trust: supporting the full range of their creativity and ensuring they have the power to decide how their films and shows are made.” She emphasized that new tools should enhance creative freedom rather than replace the roles of writers, directors, actors, and crew members.
Echoing this sentiment, Chief Technology and Product Officer Elizabeth Stone expressed that the acquisition aligns with Netflix’s overarching philosophy regarding AI. “The InterPositive team is joining Netflix because of our shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them,” she noted.
In conclusion, Netflix’s strategic acquisition of InterPositive highlights the streaming giant’s intent to leverage AI technology in a way that enhances storytelling while maintaining the human touch that is essential to filmmaking. As the industry navigates its evolving landscape, this move will likely be closely observed by both creators and executives alike.
