Nintendo Unveils New GL and GR Buttons on Switch 2 Pro Controller

Nintendo has introduced two innovative features in its latest controller, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, designed to enhance the gaming experience. The new GL and GR buttons, located on the back of the controller, are fully remappable, allowing players to assign frequently used actions to more ergonomic positions. This design aims to reduce thumb strain and facilitate quicker inputs during gameplay.

The inclusion of programmable back buttons marks a significant first for Nintendo, as it is the first time the company has integrated such functionality into one of its first-party controllers. The GL and GR buttons are directly tied to the Switch 2’s system software. Players can customize these buttons only while actively engaged in a game, a departure from typical remapping practices found on other consoles.

To configure the controller, players need to hold the HOME button during gameplay, which opens the Quick Settings menu on the Switch 2 system. From this interface, users can select either the GL or GR button and choose the action they wish to assign. When switching between titles, the controller automatically adjusts the button assignments to match the last used settings for that specific game.

It is important to note that unlike other consoles, where remapping can be done through the main menu, the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s back buttons are exclusively configured through the Quick Settings during gameplay. Consequently, these buttons cannot be utilized for navigating the system interface.

Nintendo has also extended this functionality to the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, which features smaller GL and GR buttons that operate in the same manner.
