Obsidian Entertainment has responded to player feedback by making significant adjustments to the upgrade system in its role-playing game, Avowed. Game director Gabe Paramo acknowledged that many players found the upgrading experience frustrating, which led to a disconnect between the game’s design and player expectations.

At launch, Avowed required players to engage with its upgrade system to maintain the viability of their weapons and armor while exploring new areas. This necessity proved problematic for some, as eager adventurers often found themselves hindered not by challenging combat but by the limitations of the upgrade system. Paramo remarked, “We were definitely surprised by how many people consistently bounced off the upgrading experience.”

The game’s open-area design allowed players to explore freely, but many felt that the upgrade requirements did not keep pace with their exploration. According to Paramo, “That frustration came through loud and clear. We’ve since addressed it and made the experience much more gradual and less binary.”

Key Changes in the Anniversary Update

The recent anniversary update introduces numerous enhancements aimed at improving player engagement with the game. Among these are new playable races, including dwarves and Orlans, as well as a New Game Plus mode and a revamped progression system. Paramo noted that the community had expressed concerns over the upgrade economy, stating, “There was a strong community sentiment that the economy was way too tight.”

Players reported feeling that they were encountering content too quickly due to a lack of unique gear variety and steep equipment prices. The upgrade system was deemed resource-intensive, making it challenging for players to progress smoothly. In response, Obsidian aimed to create a more balanced experience. Paramo highlighted that the friction within the progression system has been significantly reduced, allowing players to engage more flexibly with upgrades.

The update also features new custom difficulty modifiers that enable players to adjust not just their character’s power but also aspects of the game world, including merchant prices and upgrade material costs. This flexibility should make acquiring and upgrading gear far less cumbersome.

Future Prospects for Obsidian’s Titles

While Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 did not meet all expectations, the success of Grounded 2 shows promise for Obsidian’s future projects, including potential expansions within the Pillars of Eternity universe. The adjustments made in Avowed’s latest update reflect the studio’s commitment to responding to player feedback, ensuring that their gaming experiences align more closely with community desires.

As Obsidian continues to develop its games, the lessons learned from Avowed’s launch and subsequent updates may shape the design and mechanics of future titles. The anniversary update is now live, offering players a chance to experience these enhancements firsthand.
