Fans of the popular webcomic “Lore Olympus” can finally celebrate as Prime Video has confirmed it will produce an adult animated series based on Rachel Smythe’s acclaimed work. The adaptation is set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories, making it a significant global release for the streaming platform.

The series, produced by WEBTOON Productions and The Jim Henson Company, marks a notable milestone as it will be the first adult animated series from the renowned Jim Henson Company. This new project follows the conclusion of the original “Lore Olympus” webcomic, which ended its six-year run in 2024.

A Contemporary Retelling of Greek Mythology

Originally launched on WEBTOON in 2018, “Lore Olympus” quickly gained popularity, amassing over 1.8 billion global views. The webcomic presents a modern retelling of the ancient myth of Persephone, weaving in contemporary themes of power, trauma, identity, and forbidden love. Its unique narrative style and stunning visuals have captivated readers worldwide, earning it multiple prestigious awards including an Eisner Award, a Harvey Award, and a Ringo Award for Best Webcomic or Digital Book, all in the same year.

Julia Cooperman will take on the roles of showrunner, writer, and executive producer for the adaptation. She expressed her excitement, stating, “I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and WEBTOON on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular webcomic.” Cooperman emphasized the relevance of these enduring tales in modern storytelling and looks forward to sharing this reimagining of the Persephone and Hades story with both new audiences and long-time fans.

David Madden, President of WEBTOON Productions, highlighted the passionate global fandom that “Lore Olympus” has cultivated. He noted, “With stunning artwork, rich storytelling, and unforgettable characters, Lore Olympus and Rachel Smythe have built a passionate global fandom clamoring for more.”

Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, described the project as “deeply inspiring,” recognizing Smythe’s contemporary approach to mythology as more relevant than ever. Melissa Wolfe, Prime Video’s Head of Animation, echoed this sentiment, calling the collaboration an “exciting addition to Prime Video’s growing animation slate.”

Upcoming Releases and Future Plans

“Lore Olympus” will join other notable titles in Prime Video’s adult animation portfolio, which includes adaptations from Critical Role such as “The Legend of Vox Machina” and “The Mighty Nein,” along with projects like “Secret Level” and “Hazbin Hotel.” While a release date for the animated series has not yet been announced, anticipation continues to build among fans eager to see how this beloved webcomic is brought to life on screen.
