Rebecca Gayheart has taken significant steps to secure necessary care for her estranged husband, Eric Dane, following his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In a personal essay published in The Cut on December 29, Gayheart detailed the challenges she faced in obtaining around-the-clock nursing support for the former stars of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria.”

Care Struggles and Advocacy

Despite being separated for eight years, Gayheart emphasized her commitment to ensuring Dane receives the best possible care. She recounted her battle with an insurance company to approve the nursing arrangements. “With the nurses, the woman from his insurance said to me, ‘You can keep applying, and I’ll keep denying,'” she wrote. Gayheart described how she became determined to secure the necessary support, stating, “I made it my mission. I was ‘locked in.’ We got it approved after two appeals.”

The couple, who share two teenage daughters, initially filed for divorce in 2018. However, Gayheart dismissed the filing in March 2025, shortly before Dane publicly announced his condition. ALS is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, with no known cure.

A Complicated Relationship

In her essay, Gayheart reflected on their complex relationship, describing it as “confusing for people.” She noted, “Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.” Gayheart expressed her commitment to Dane’s well-being, stating, “Eric knows that I am always going to want the best for him. That I’m going to do my best to do right by him.” She hopes to model this supportive behavior for their daughters, emphasizing that helping others in difficult times is the right thing to do.

Gayheart explained that Dane’s care involves dividing time into 21 shifts per week. When she cannot cover certain shifts due to her own responsibilities, she turns to friends for assistance. “There was a 12-hour shift recently that I could not cover. I could only do four hours because of all the stuff that the kids are doing,” she noted. Upon reaching out for help, she was met with a positive response from Dane’s friends, who stepped in to support him.

Despite facing challenges, Gayheart remains understanding of those who have distanced themselves during this difficult time. “Most people are not great in this situation because it’s so heavy. It’s not easy for people,” she acknowledged. “So I don’t hold any grudges toward who hasn’t shown up.” Through her advocacy and dedication, Gayheart exemplifies a commitment to family and compassion in the face of adversity.
