Remembering Walter Clarence Gilliam: A Life of Service and Creativity

Walter Clarence Gilliam, affectionately known as “Piggy” and “Waldo,” passed away recently, leaving a legacy of service and creativity. He was born on August 31, 1944, in Cairo, Illinois, to Reverend Mayo and Culer Gilliam. Walter was the sixth of their children and had a remarkable journey through life marked by both personal achievements and professional dedication.

Gilliam attended Douglas School and graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in 1962. He made a significant impact on the school’s athletic program, notably as a pitcher for the varsity baseball team, where he earned the title of Gary All-Star MVP. His passion for the arts led him to pursue studies in graphic design at several institutions, including Alabama A&M University, Chicago State University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Throughout his career, Gilliam held various positions in diverse fields, starting with his work at Ford Stamping and Inland Steel. He also spent time at American Can and served with the Gary Police Department. Walter concluded his career as a U.S. Criminal Investigating Lieutenant, where his skills and dedication were instrumental in serving his community. He was a founding member of H & H INC and had a notable military background as a veteran of the Vietnam War, being a life member of VFW Post #2151, Amvets Post #6, and American Legion Post #270.

Walter was an active member of St. John MBC in Gary, Indiana, where he contributed to his community and shared his love for various activities. His interests included billiards, bid-whist, pinochle, and a deep appreciation for jazz and gospel music. Gilliam was also a talented cook and enjoyed photography, painting, sports, and traveling, reflecting a vibrant personality and a zest for life.

He is survived by his son, Jeramine (Brittney) Duff, and granddaughter, Angel Walker. His siblings, including sisters Thelma Rainge and Arlessie McNeil, along with brothers Oliver (Mary Brown) Gilliam and Marvin (Cora) Gilliam, will also remember him fondly. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy Gilliam-Ford, along with her husband, Rudolph Rainge.

Visitation for Walter Gilliam will take place on December 13, 2025, at Smith, Bizzell and Warner Funeral Home Chapel, located at 4209 Richard G. Hatcher Blvd., Gary, IN 46408. The funeral service will commence promptly at 11:00 AM. Friends and family are encouraged to honor his memory with flowers or by planting a living memorial in his name.
