Salsa Legend Rafael Ithier of El Gran Combo Passes Away at 99
Rafael Ithier, a towering figure in the world of salsa music and the founder of the iconic band El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, has died at the age of 99. His death was confirmed by attorney Víctor Rivera to the radio station WKAQ on March 2, 2024. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Ithier’s contribution to music and culture in Puerto Rico is immeasurable. Marlese Sifre, the mayor of Ponce, expressed the profound impact of his legacy, stating, “Puerto Rico has lost a giant, a man whose life was dedicated to elevating our identity through the art and rhythm that distinguishes us to the world.” As the musical director of El Gran Combo, Ithier played a critical role in shaping the salsa genre and inspiring a new generation of artists, including notable names such as Bad Bunny.
Born in San Juan, Ithier was raised in the working-class neighborhood of Río Piedras. He faced early hardship, losing his father when he was just eight years old. Despite these challenges, he embraced music from a young age, learning to play guitar at ten while performing in local stores for tips, according to the National Foundation for Popular Culture.
By the age of 14, Ithier left school due to financial constraints and began working various jobs. His musical journey began in earnest when he joined Conjunto Hawaiano, where he honed his skills on instruments like the Cuban tres and double bass. His self-driven education continued as he learned piano and taught himself to read music, setting the foundation for his future success.
Ithier’s musical career took a significant turn when he joined the U.S. Army, serving in Korea during the conflict. After his service, he moved to New York and formed “The Borinqueneers Mambo Kings,” named in honor of the distinguished 65th Infantry Regiment of Puerto Rico. Upon returning to Puerto Rico, he joined the influential band Cortijo y Su Combo but nearly abandoned music after the arrest of their famed singer, Ismael Rivera.
Fortunately, two Cuban brothers who would later help establish El Gran Combo persuaded him to continue. The group made its debut in May 1962 at the Rock’n Roll Club in Bayamón, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would span over half a century. Ithier’s leadership style, characterized by his trademark smile and strong work ethic, contributed to the band’s enduring success.
In a 2016 interview with Primera Hora, Ithier reflected on his life and the discipline he gained from his military service. He stated, “I learned to be a man and to obey an order. That discipline is what I apply to my life, and what I base my life on.” Under his direction, El Gran Combo grew to be a breeding ground for musical talent, earning the nickname “the University of Salsa.”
Musicians such as Charlie Aponte, who shared the stage with Ithier, expressed their deep admiration for him on social media. Aponte wrote, “For me, Rafa was and will continue to be like a father. He taught us and demanded responsibility, discipline, and professionalism in our work.” This commitment to excellence helped the orchestra achieve international acclaim, with over 40 albums and hits such as “Jala Jala,” “Me Liberé,” and “Un Verano en Nueva York,” the latter of which inspired Bad Bunny’s popular track, “Nuevayol.”
The news of Ithier’s passing resonated deeply within the salsa community. Agustín Montañez Allman, Puerto Rico’s government advocate for veteran affairs, lamented the loss, stating, “Ithier is one of those immortals who has brought glory to our country.”
Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer Colón also paid tribute to Ithier, announcing plans for an official day of mourning on the island. “His legacy transcends borders and lives on through generations. Thank you so much, maestro,” she said in a statement.
Rafael Ithier leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and salsa enthusiasts alike. He is survived by his wife and five children, who will undoubtedly carry forward the rich musical heritage he helped create.
