Stevie Wonder Celebrates Marathon Burger Opening Before Nearby Shooting
Stevie Wonder attended the grand opening of Marathon Burger in Long Beach, California, on March 31, 2024. The festive event was marked by celebrity appearances and strong community support, but it was overshadowed by a shooting that occurred nearby shortly after the celebration began. The incident resulted in one fatality and at least two injuries.
A representative for Marathon Burger clarified that the shooting was unrelated to the restaurant’s opening. “The opening was a huge success with strong community support,” the spokesperson stated to CBS News. “There was an incident nearby, but it was not connected to the event. The opening itself proceeded safely and without issue.”
Videos circulating on social media captured Wonder ordering food and conversing with Blacc Sam, the brother of the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Other notable attendees included YG and Snoop Dogg, who expressed gratitude to fans during the event. The Marathon Burger Instagram account featured a clip of Snoop, in which he stated, “We thank y’all for coming out, we love y’all. L.B.C in the house tonight.” Accompanying the post, the company emphasized the positive atmosphere, asserting, “Don’t let the media fool you. It was a beautiful energy in the atmosphere today.”
Investigation Underway Following Shooting
As the community continues to celebrate the new restaurant, local authorities are investigating the shooting. According to Andrea Moran, spokesperson for the Long Beach Police Department, the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. “The motive, circumstances of the shooting, and suspect information remain under investigation,” she confirmed to the Long Beach Post.
Eric VanDyke, a relative of Nipsey Hussle, expressed disappointment about the violence overshadowing a joyous occasion. He remarked to ABC7, “I know that Nip, Blacc Sam wanted this to be a happy occasion, so it’s unfortunate that something happened that would bring more attention to the negative elements as opposed to the positive elements.”
The shooting follows a recent honor for Nipsey Hussle, as the city of Los Angeles renamed the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue as “Nipsey Hussle Square.” This tribute reflects the lasting impact the rapper had on his community and the ongoing efforts to celebrate his legacy.
As the investigation unfolds, the community of Long Beach is left to grapple with the juxtaposition of a celebratory event and the violence that marred it. The Marathon Burger opening aimed to foster unity and pride, highlighting the resilience of the local community amid such challenges.
