Trans-Siberian Orchestra Unveils Surprising New Holiday Show

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is set to thrill audiences this holiday season with an innovative twist on its traditional winter rock opera. On December 27, 2023, TSO will perform at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, showcasing its renowned blend of classically-inspired hard rock and spectacular special effects. This year’s tour, which features “Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” promises to surprise even the most dedicated fans.

For nearly three decades, TSO has captivated audiences with its unique performances, combining rock music with theatrical storytelling. According to Al Pitrelli, the group’s guitarist and musical director, this year aims to challenge expectations. “We talked about the group of people who come to see us year after year… and we said, ‘Let’s do something to put them back on their heels from the jump,’” he explained. The goal is to create an experience that leaves both returning fans and newcomers in awe.

The current tour includes not only “Ghosts of Christmas Eve,” originally a television film from 1999, but also introduces a series of surprises. Changes to the stage set, rare song performances such as “Night Enchanted” and “Winter Palace,” and a second-half celebration of the 25th anniversary of “Beethoven’s Last Night” will all enhance the show. This rock opera, TSO’s first non-Christmas themed production, features a fusion of classic compositions from Beethoven, Mozart, and Chopin alongside the original works of the late Paul O’Neill, the band’s co-founder.

The creative team remains committed to evolving the concert experience. Jeff Plate, the drummer for TSO East, emphasized the importance of keeping the show fresh. “The challenge when we go into these tours is to change it up,” he stated. He noted that while the visual elements may seem familiar, there are always new effects and surprises in store for the audience.

Fans are especially enthusiastic about the focused presentation of “Beethoven’s Last Night.” TSO performed the album just once previously, in 2012, but this tour marks a significant opportunity to experience it in detail. Pitrelli recalled the complexity of the music, stating, “I remember recording some of those pieces, going: ‘This ain’t easy. We’re gonna have to get the chops going on this one.’” The arrangements, he believes, are pivotal to the storytelling that defines TSO’s identity.
