“Tuner” Showcases Leo Woodall as a Unique Safecracking Prodigy
The film “Tuner” introduces audiences to a captivating narrative featuring Leo Woodall as Niki, a piano tuner whose extraordinary hearing ability leads him into the world of safecracking. Directed by Daniel Roher, who is known for his Oscar-winning work, this film marks Roher’s first foray into narrative features. It explores the duality of Niki’s talents, portraying both his musical aspirations and the dangerous criminal underbelly that seeks to exploit them.
Niki, portrayed by Woodall, is “a gifted young piano tuner” whose acute sensitivity to sound, a result of a unique ailment, renders loud noises intolerable. This same condition enhances his musical abilities, allowing him to detect even the most subtle discordances while tuning pianos. As he navigates his new reality, he works alongside his mentor, Harry Horowitz, played by Dustin Hoffman. The film’s official synopsis details Niki’s journey through the vibrant streets of New York, where he encounters a variety of characters, including Ruthie, a composition student portrayed by Havana Rose Liu. Their relationship adds a layer of complexity to Niki’s life as he balances his budding romance with the dangerous demands of his safecracking work.
The Film’s Journey and Critical Reception
“Tuner” made its debut at the Telluride Film Festival last fall, later screening at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it garnered attention from both audiences and critics alike. Financial backer Black Bear announced its distribution plans during TIFF, further indicating the film’s potential in the competitive cinematic landscape.
Caleb Hammond, writing for our publication, noted that the film “seems to relish combining its quirky elements into something emotional and resonant.” He emphasized the playful nature of the film, stating that it “rarely takes itself too seriously” while allowing for character interactions that feel genuine and engaging. Despite its lighthearted tone, Roher skillfully addresses the darker themes that arise from the characters’ circumstances, maintaining a balance between humor and tension.
Upcoming Screenings and Release Plans
Following its festival circuit, “Tuner” is set to screen at the Sundance Film Festival this week, further expanding its reach to film enthusiasts. The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on May 22, 2024, with plans for a broader rollout on May 29, 2024. As anticipation builds, audiences can look forward to experiencing the unique blend of humor and suspense that “Tuner” promises, alongside a standout performance from Woodall and a stellar cast that includes Tovah Feldshuh, Jean Reno, and Lior Raz.
With its intriguing premise and talented ensemble, “Tuner” is poised to captivate viewers, exploring the intersections of art, crime, and personal connection in a way that resonates across diverse audiences. As the film prepares for release, its blend of emotional depth and lightheartedness sets the stage for what could be one of the more memorable cinematic experiences of the year.
