W.F. West High School Stages ‘Beetlejuice’ as Director Brian Adams Retires

The W.F. West High School Theatre in Chehalis, Washington, is set to showcase the musical “Beetlejuice,” marking the final production for long-time theater director Brian Adams. After an impressive 30-year tenure and overseeing over 50 productions, Adams will conclude his directorial journey with this winter musical, which runs from December 12 to 20, 2023.

Adams expressed his sentiments about stepping back from the role, stating, “I still have it in me, but I think it’s time for some new blood.” His decision coincided perfectly with the timing of “Beetlejuice,” a recent Broadway adaptation based on the iconic 1988 Tim Burton film. Adams had been eager to have W.F. West included in the list of schools eligible to perform the musical once it became accessible for high school productions. He noted the distinctiveness of the musical compared to the film, emphasizing its vibrant costumes and engaging soundtrack.

This production follows the story of a deceased couple who enlist the help of a mischievous bio-exorcist ghost, Betelgeuse, in their attempt to haunt the new residents of their former home. The narrative intertwines themes of grief and acceptance, particularly through the character of Lydia, a young girl grappling with her mother’s death and her father’s neglect.

W.F. West senior Ruby Stanton, who portrays Lydia, shared her thoughts on the relevance of the themes in the show, saying, “These are things that happen in real life, which I really enjoy that it’s being told in a show.” Another cast member, junior Charlotte Calway, plays Lydia’s stepmother and reflected on her character’s relationship dynamics, stating that her own experiences have allowed her to view the role in a new light.

For senior Justin Hazlett, who plays the titular character, the opportunity to perform as Betelgeuse has been a dream come true. He remarked, “I just really clicked with the character,” describing him as “wacky, zany,” and “very loud.” Hazlett noted that stepping into this role has allowed him to explore his own identity as an actor.

Though Adams will be retiring from his directorial position, he intends to remain involved with the theater program in a consulting capacity. He emphasized his commitment to the students and the program’s future, stating, “I want to be a part of it, like a consultant. I will be a consultant for anybody.” He encourages those interested in taking over the program to apply when the job posting becomes available early next year, expressing his desire to see the successful program continue.

The “Beetlejuice” performances are scheduled for December 12, 13, 19, and 20, starting at 19:30 each night, with an additional matinee performance at 14:00 on December 20. Audiences should be aware of a photosensitivity warning due to the use of flashing, strobe, and laser lights throughout the show.
