Yakima Symphony Orchestra Unveils New Mission Statement to Inspire Community

The Yakima Symphony Orchestra has announced a new mission statement aimed at enhancing its role within the community. The statement emphasizes the orchestra’s commitment to “enrich, educate, and inspire the Yakima Valley through captivating concerts of classical and popular music.” This update signifies a pivotal moment for the organization, reflecting its substantial growth over the past decade.

Executive Director Sam McClung highlighted that the revised mission statement encapsulates the orchestra’s evolution in size, quality, programming, and community impact. Over the years, the ensemble has expanded its repertoire and outreach, demonstrating its dedication to the cultural landscape of the Yakima Valley.

The orchestra’s recent performances have showcased a range of monumental works, including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 “Pastoral,” Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 “Titan,” and Verdi’s Requiem. Notably, the latter piece was contextualized by its historic performance by prisoners at Terezín, adding depth to the experience for audiences.

Upcoming Highlights and Diverse Programming

Looking ahead, the Yakima Symphony Orchestra has an exciting season planned. Among the upcoming performances is Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, which will be presented alongside the Yakima Symphony Chorus. This season also promises works by renowned composers such as Aaron Copland and Johann Strauss Jr., alongside contemporary pieces by Nancy Ives and Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate.

In a bid to celebrate cultural diversity, the orchestra will feature a program dedicated to Hispanic composers. This includes works by Manuel de Falla, Silvestre Revueltas, and Arturo Márquez, further enriching the musical landscape of the Yakima Valley.
