Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ Arrives on DVD and Blu-ray Soon
The acclaimed sci-fi comedy Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, is set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 23, 2023. The film, which experienced a disappointing box office run of just $32 million, will be available for rent or purchase on digital platforms starting tomorrow, November 25.
Based on a script by Will Tracy, co-writer of The Menu, Bugonia adapts the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!. The story follows two conspiracy-obsessed cousins who kidnap a powerful CEO, convinced she belongs to an alien species intent on humanity’s destruction. As they interrogate their captive, the plot spirals into chaos, blending dark humor with unexpected twists.
The film features a strong cast, including Jesse Plemons as the leader of the cousins, Teddy, and newcomer Aidan Delbis as his cousin, Don. Critics have responded positively to the film, with Collider reviewer Ross Bonaime rating it 8 out of 10 and praising the performances, especially those of Stone and Plemons, whom he described as delivering “two performances of the year.”
Despite its lower-than-expected box office performance, Bugonia has garnered favorable reviews from audiences and critics alike, achieving an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an 84% audience score. The home release will include a featurette titled “The Birth of the Bees: The Making of Bugonia,” providing insights into the film’s production.
Future Projects for Lanthimos and Stone
Following their recent collaborations, Lanthimos and Stone appear to be taking a brief hiatus. In an interview with Collider, Lanthimos expressed interest in stepping back after the demanding schedules of Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and now Bugonia. Meanwhile, Stone has not publicly announced any new acting roles but is actively involved in production.
In April, it was revealed that she is producing a new musical comedy project by Jesse Eisenberg through her company, Fruit Tree, in collaboration with A24 and Topic Studios. This upcoming film, a follow-up to Eisenberg’s Oscar-winning work, will feature a star-studded cast, including Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. Production began in April, but details on its release remain under wraps.
As Bugonia prepares for its home release, fans of Lanthimos and Stone can look forward to more unique storytelling from this dynamic duo in the future.
