AI Startup Nabla Set to Gain from $1 Billion Funding Round

A significant development in the health technology sector has emerged as the AI startup Nabla is poised to benefit from a substantial funding round. The company will gain early access to groundbreaking technology from Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI), which recently announced it had raised a remarkable $1 billion. This investment aims to advance the development of “world models,” a concept championed by Yann LeCun, the former chief AI scientist at Meta.

Nabla, an AI documentation company, is strategically positioned to leverage this new technology. With Alex LeBrun serving as both the co-founder and CEO of Nabla and the CEO of AMI, there is a close collaboration between the two organizations. Although there is currently no formal equity or licensing agreement, both companies are working together to explore the potential of world models in healthcare. According to Delphine Groll, COO of Nabla, the partnership is already yielding productive results.

LeBrun, Groll, and Martin Raison, Nabla’s CTO, recently published a blog post outlining the healthcare applications of world models. They describe these models as capable of learning abstract representations of environmental functions, much like human reasoning. Unlike traditional probabilistic large language models that generate unpredictable outcomes, the executives assert that this new approach will enable “safe, deterministic, auditable decision-making.” They also emphasize its potential to provide “a credible regulatory pathway for autonomous, agentic systems.”

In another noteworthy development, Cadence, a company known for its remote patient monitoring services, announced its intention to participate in the Medicare ACCESS model set to launch in July. This initiative aims to incentivize technology-enabled care by aligning payments with patient outcomes rather than individual services. Despite some criticism regarding the payment amounts established by Medicare, Cadence CEO Chris Altchek expressed confidence in the AI systems the company has developed and its strategy for safely introducing new clinical AI solutions.

In the realm of telehealth, Hims has decided to retract its plans to market compounded versions of GLP-1 medications for obesity and diabetes. Instead, the company will offer branded versions of drugs produced by Novo Nordisk. This decision follows a patent infringement lawsuit that Novo filed against Hims after the latter announced its intention to market a compounded pill containing semaglutide. Hims may still provide compounded GLP-1s if deemed medically necessary by a healthcare provider.

The issue of rising healthcare costs associated with AI has also gained attention. Blue Cross Blue Shield recently released an analysis indicating that AI-driven coding may be contributing to increased expenses, particularly in claims for postpartum hemorrhage. This finding aligns with claims made by health insurers during last summer’s earnings calls that AI is influencing overall healthcare costs.

In a notable business move, mental health company Talkspace is set to be acquired for $835 million by Universal Health Services. This acquisition comes nearly five years after Talkspace went public during the height of the pandemic-driven digital health boom.

Finally, a recent proposal suggests a paradigm shift in how health and biomedical data is governed. Researchers and industry experts advocate for treating real-world health data as a public utility, arguing that this data should belong to patients rather than healthcare providers. Alastair Thomson, former chief data officer for ARPA-H, emphasized the importance of empowering patients to control their data in a conversation regarding this proposal.
