Community Mourns Loss of David Cotter Jr. After Struggle with Mental Health

David Michael Cotter Jr., aged 37, passed away on November 5, 2025, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, after a long battle with mental health challenges. His life journey, marked by service and dedication, has left a profound impact on his family and community.

Born on February 29, 1988, in Saint Paul, David was the son of David Cotter Sr. and Anne Marie Bluhm. He demonstrated a commitment to education by earning his GED before enlisting in the United States Army National Guard. His military service, which spanned from October 12, 2005, to October 11, 2007, included time stationed at Fort Benning in Atlanta, Georgia. During this period, he attained the rank of Private First Class (PFC) and received several medals for his dedication.

After his military tenure, David transitioned to a career as a barge deckhand with Upper River Services. His interests outside of work included fishing, playing video games, and cheering for the Minnesota Vikings. Friends and family remember him for his big, comforting hugs, humor, kindness, and his unforgettable laugh. Above all, David’s love for his children—David Cotter III, Marianna Cotter, Nakoma Cotter, and Cayda Cotter—was a defining aspect of his life.

David was preceded in death by several family members, including his great-grandparents, Frances Bluhm and Samuel Bluhm, as well as his grandmother and grandfather, and he leaves behind a loving family including his brother, Christopher Thull, sister, Cesley Chavez, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Arrangements and Community Support

A service honoring David Cotter Jr. is scheduled for Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Galilee Lutheran Church in Roseville, Minnesota, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Following the service, interment will take place at Union Cemetery in Maplewood, Minnesota. The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, Minnesota, has assisted the family with funeral arrangements.
