Community Urged to Prioritize Safety in School Renovation Vote
Concerns about safety and health are at the forefront of discussions regarding the future of *Monument Mountain High School* in *Great Barrington*. On *November 4*, residents of *Great Barrington*, *Stockbridge*, and *West Stockbridge* will vote on funding for a new high school facility, with the state pledging nearly *$60 million* toward the project.
Emily Newman Stanton, a local veterinarian and parent, has expressed deep concerns about the school’s current state, emphasizing that the building, constructed in the mid-1960s, poses significant health risks. The existing structure has received only minor repairs over the years and lacks essential updates to meet modern educational standards. Stanton highlights that the classrooms are dark and uninspiring, failing to provide an effective learning environment.
A major issue lies in the presence of hazardous materials commonly used in mid-century construction. These include asbestos, lead paint, and PCB-containing materials, all of which are toxic and potentially harmful. Stanton argues that the environment is fundamentally unhealthy and cannot be brought up to current safety standards without substantial investment.
Addressing Safety Concerns
Stanton’s concerns extend beyond environmental health. She points out that the school’s design predates modern awareness of safety protocols related to school violence. The layout lacks secure access and controlled entry, which are now considered essential for student safety. Last year, *Monument Mountain* experienced multiple lockdowns due to threats, which, although ultimately unfounded, created significant anxiety among students and parents alike.
“Students practice for active shooter drills in a structure that was never designed for that reality. That is not acceptable,” Stanton states. Her dual perspective as a parent and a veterinarian underscores her commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of children in the community.
The proposed new school is presented not as a luxury upgrade but as a necessary step towards creating a safe and healthy environment for students. Stanton believes that the community must recognize the importance of investing in their children’s education and safety, as the current building reflects outdated assumptions and materials.
A Critical Decision for the Community
The decision on November 4 represents a pivotal moment for the community. If voters choose to move forward with the funding, it would signal a commitment to ensuring that the next generation has access to a facility that meets contemporary safety and educational standards. Failure to act could result in losing the state funding and leaving students in an unsafe and uninspiring environment for years to come.
Stanton concludes with a call to action, urging community members to prioritize safety and responsibility in their voting decisions. The future of *Monument Mountain High School* is not just about constructing a new building; it is about safeguarding the health, safety, and overall wellbeing of students in *Great Barrington* and surrounding areas.
