Global Psoriasis Rates Expected to Surge by 2050, Study Finds

A recent global analysis indicates that the incidence of psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition, is projected to increase significantly by the year 2050. The study, led by Linli Liu, MD, from the department of dermatology at Suining Central Hospital in China, highlights the expanding impact of this condition across various demographics, including age groups, sexes, and geographic regions.

The research team utilized data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021 to forecast the global incidence of psoriasis. The analysis focused on the years from 1990 to 2021, examining how prevalence and disease incidence varied across 236 countries. This comprehensive approach aimed to fill gaps in previous studies that did not adequately account for differences in age, sex, and geography.

Understanding the Rising Burden of Psoriasis

The findings revealed a moderate increase in the burden of psoriasis from 1990 to 2021. Specifically, age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) for males rose from 56.89 to 62.77 cases per 100,000, marking a 10.3% increase. For females, the ASIR increased from 57.08 to 61.26 cases per 100,000, representing a 7.3% rise. By 2050, projections suggest that approximately 70 per 100,000 men and 66 per 100,000 women are expected to be affected by psoriasis.

Liu and colleagues employed an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model to predict these trends, establishing a clear connection between the incidence of psoriasis and the Sociodemographic Index (SDI). Notably, a strong positive correlation (P < .001) was identified, emphasizing the relationship between economic factors and health outcomes.

Geographic Disparities and Future Implications

The analysis also highlighted significant geographic disparities in psoriasis incidence. Regions such as East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa reported notably lower disease estimates, which the researchers attributed to the limited availability of data and potential underreporting. In contrast, Western Europe and North America exhibited the highest crude incidence and prevalence rates.

Among younger populations (ages 5-19), the incidence rates were similar for both boys and girls. However, the study found that disease incidence increased sharply with age, particularly among older males. This trend underscores the necessity for targeted public health strategies to improve access to diagnosis and treatment for affected populations.

The research team concluded that the global burden of psoriasis is expected to rise, with implications for healthcare systems worldwide. While the initial findings indicated a steady increase in both sexes, the sensitivity analysis revealed that excluding data from 2021 resulted in a diminished projected increase for males, introducing greater uncertainty into the forecasts.

As the study illustrates, understanding the evolving landscape of psoriasis is crucial for informing public health interventions. Liu and colleagues emphasize that further research is necessary to explore the underlying factors contributing to sex-specific differences and the significant burden observed in high-income regions. These insights will aid in the development of effective strategies to address the growing prevalence of this chronic condition globally.
