Mother’s Vigilance Saves Her Life After Skin Cancer Diagnosis
In a life-altering turn of events, Courtney Siley, a 36-year-old mother from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, received a diagnosis of Stage II melanoma after persistent concerns about a mark on her face. Initially dismissed as a “weird birthmark,” the blemish prompted Siley to seek further medical evaluation, ultimately leading to a critical cancer diagnosis.
For years, Siley had observed a small mark on her cheek that seemed innocuous. As it began to change in size and shape, comments from her family about the mark’s appearance encouraged her to consult a doctor. After undergoing a biopsy, she was initially relieved when the results returned negative for melanoma. “I felt good and relieved that it wasn’t anything,” Siley said. Yet, her relief was short-lived as the mark continued to evolve.
Recognizing the Warning Signs
Months later, Siley revisited her concerns as she scrutinized old photographs and realized the mark was a recent development. By then, it had transformed significantly, becoming irregularly shaped with jagged edges. This change raised alarm bells, as dermatologists emphasize that distinguishing between benign marks and malignant melanoma can be challenging. According to the Cleveland Clinic, melanoma is often asymmetrical, varies in color, and has uneven borders. The organization recommends using the ABCDEs of skin cancer detection: Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving.
At her next annual checkup, Siley insisted on a biopsy, despite the previous negative results. Her persistence paid off when, in July 2023, she was diagnosed with Stage II melanoma. Siley expressed gratitude for the early detection, acknowledging the potential severity of her condition.
Facing Surgery and Recovery
Following her diagnosis, Siley underwent surgery approximately six weeks later to remove the melanoma. Although first anticipated as a 45-minute procedure, the operation extended to two hours due to the cancer’s larger size than initially assessed, particularly given its proximity to her eye. “I was in bed for about a week after the surgery,” Siley recalled, describing her experience with swelling and a lack of appetite. “I was scared. I have two children I need to show up for.” She reflected on her journey, recognizing that without her insistence on further testing, the outcome could have been drastically different.
The surgical scars extend from her cheek to behind her ear, serving as a reminder of her battle with cancer. Fortunately, Siley has made a full recovery and now encourages others to take skin health seriously. “Vigilance is key,” she urged, noting that melanoma has a 99 percent cure rate when detected early.
Siley’s experience with melanoma has resonated widely. She shared her story on TikTok, where it garnered over 710,600 views and more than 9,100 likes. Through her posts, she emphasizes the importance of skin checks, encouraging viewers not to overlook any unusual changes. “I’m a survivor,” she stated. “These scars have helped others realize how important it is to take care of their skin.” With heartfelt gratitude, Siley acknowledged the support of her family throughout her ordeal, reinforcing the message that proactive health measures can be life-saving.
For those concerned about their skin health, Siley’s story serves as a powerful reminder to seek medical advice. By advocating for oneself and remaining vigilant about changes in skin conditions, individuals can significantly impact their health outcomes.
