New Lab at Northwell Health to Investigate Psychedelic Treatments

A new research facility at Zucker Hillside Hospital, located on the border of Queens and Nassau counties, is set to explore the therapeutic potential of psychedelic substances. The Center for Psychedelics Research and Treatment will investigate the effects of cannabis, MDMA—commonly known as ecstasy or molly—and psilocybin, a compound found in “magic mushrooms,” on patients seeking psychiatric assistance.

Dr. Nehal Vadhan from Northwell Health emphasized the evolving perspective on psychedelics, stating, “Psychedelics have sort of come into a new age now where they’re being looked at not simply as drugs of recreation or self-exploration or even a drug of abuse but really as therapeutic medicine.” The research will specifically target conditions like social anxiety disorder, with the hope that psilocybin can help individuals form deeper connections with their surroundings.

In addition to assessing the psychological benefits of these substances, the lab will also evaluate their physiological effects. Dr. Vadhan pointed out that very few studies accurately measure the degree of impairment following drug or alcohol consumption. The facility will utilize a driving simulator to observe how patients perform behind the wheel after using these substances. “Field sobriety tests, measuring blood alcohol content, none of those things really are great at discerning impairment,” Dr. Vadhan noted.

The team is currently awaiting final governmental approval, with the aim to commence the first lab study within the next few weeks. This research could play a significant role in reshaping the understanding and application of psychedelics in mental health treatment. As the field evolves, the findings from this lab may contribute to broader acceptance and integration of these substances into therapeutic practices.
