New Lenox Library Launches Care Cabinet to Support Community Needs
The New Lenox Public Library has inaugurated a care cabinet that provides essential items, including Narcan, to support community members in need. Officially opened on December 4, 2023, this initiative aims to assist individuals who may feel uncomfortable seeking help directly. The cabinet features a range of free resources such as personal hygiene products, first-aid supplies, and Narcan, which is used to reverse opioid overdoses.
Executive Director Michelle Krooswyk announced that the initiative was made possible through a $1,000 grant from the Friends of The New Lenox Library. Originally slated for a January 2026 launch, the opening was expedited following significant cuts to federal assistance programs affecting lower-income residents. As these residents faced challenges with food benefits starting in early November, the library recognized the urgent need for support.
Krooswyk emphasized the library’s commitment to being a welcoming place for people from all walks of life. “As long as you behave yourself, we want to be welcoming to you and we want to support you,” she stated. The care cabinet is designed to provide assistance without judgment, allowing individuals to take what they need with no questions asked. Administrative Library Coordinator Melissa Seaberg highlighted that such an approach helps to maintain dignity for those seeking help.
The cabinet has already shown its impact, with many items, including lip balm and deodorant, quickly running out. This depletion serves as a clear indicator of community needs. Furthermore, the library has partnered with the Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization to distribute Narcan. This medication, known for its life-saving properties, is critical in addressing opioid overdoses. Krooswyk encouraged community members to participate in training sessions on how to use Narcan effectively.
Community support for the care cabinet has been remarkable, with residents contributing items and supplies. Due to the overwhelming donations, the library staff has begun regulating contributions to ensure that all items are hygienic and appropriately packaged. Interested individuals can support the initiative through monetary donations or by accessing the library’s Amazon wish list.
The inspiration behind the care cabinet stemmed from a presentation by the Rock Island Public Library at a PrairieCat meeting, where different libraries share successful initiatives. “We just like to find and share ways to support the community,” Krooswyk remarked, reflecting on her nearly 25 years of experience in library services.
The care cabinet’s launch was strategically timed for December, a period following the library’s busiest season. Seaberg managed the logistical aspects of the cabinet’s setup, ordering necessary supplies and bins. To raise additional funds, she initiated a playful fundraising campaign involving crocheted kitten figurines, which have captivated community interest and are set to continue with seasonal themes.
Krooswyk pointed out that the library offers a variety of non-literary resources, including tech support for older adults, a safe space for unhoused individuals, job assistance, and areas for families and students to gather. The library’s commitment to being a multifaceted community resource is exemplified by its recent successful referendum, which secured a 7-cent increase in the library district’s tax rate to ensure sustainable funding.
The care cabinet is open indefinitely during library hours, and the crocheted cat fundraiser will conclude on December 16, 2023. Looking ahead, the library plans to unveil a new café space in January and will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year. Discussions regarding further renovations are also on the agenda, reflecting the library’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and support.
