Oregon AG Rayfield Addresses Health Policy at OHSU Amid Federal Changes
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield visited the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to discuss critical health policy issues in light of recent federal changes. The meeting brought together medical leaders and staff to address concerns regarding research funding, reproductive health, and gender-affirming care. Rayfield emphasized that “patients and families should be the ones making decisions about their own health care,” stressing the importance of maintaining access to essential services.
During his visit, Rayfield toured the Vista Pavilion, which is dedicated to cancer treatment and research, as well as the Center for Women’s Health, where he met with staff involved in providing gender-affirming care. His discussions highlighted Oregon’s proactive stance on health care access, particularly in light of potential federal restrictions.
Aaron Frey, the Attorney General of Maine, joined Rayfield ahead of a multistate attorneys general town hall at Revolution Hall. Frey’s presence underscored the importance of collaboration among states to address health care challenges.
Dr. Nathan R. Selden, Dean of OHSU’s School of Medicine, expressed gratitude towards Rayfield and the Oregon Department of Justice for their support. He stated, “We were grateful to host Attorney General Rayfield to give him a closer look at the critical work happening across OHSU’s core missions.” His comments reaffirmed the need for ongoing support for research, education, and patient access to care.
The visit by Rayfield is part of Oregon’s broader commitment to safeguarding access to health care services, including gender-affirming care and abortion services. The state is currently leading a multistate lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services over proposed federal policies that could limit funding to health care providers. The aim is to ensure that hospitals, health centers, and universities continue to receive necessary resources without federal interference, allowing them to provide care without fear of restrictions.
Rayfield’s engagement with OHSU illustrates the state’s dedication to addressing health policy concerns in a rapidly evolving landscape. As discussions around health care continue, Oregon positions itself as a leader in advocating for the rights of patients and health care providers alike.
