A new initiative in Raleigh aims to enhance support for individuals experiencing mental health crises. The City has launched the Crisis Call Diversion (CCD) Line, connecting 911 callers with trained mental health professionals. This program is designed to provide immediate assistance and guidance during moments of emotional distress.

According to the City of Raleigh, the pilot program features three licensed clinicians, including James Pearce. These professionals handle incoming calls to offer specialized support and de-escalation services to individuals in crisis. In its initial month of operation, the CCD Line has managed dozens of calls, alleviating pressure on local law enforcement and emergency services.

The initiative redirects 911 calls that pertain to mental or behavioral health issues to the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center. Here, clinicians like Ashley Wilson, who brings 15 years of crisis intervention experience, assess the situation and provide appropriate care. By utilizing this system, calls that would traditionally require intervention from Emergency Medical Services (EMS) or the Raleigh Police are now addressed by trained mental health professionals.

Addressing Community Needs

The CCD program operates Monday through Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and is specifically geared toward individuals who are not armed and do not pose an immediate threat to themselves or others. This focused approach allows clinicians to offer a safe and supportive environment for those in need, ensuring that they receive the appropriate care and guidance.

Wilson emphasizes that the program not only aids individuals in crisis but also benefits the broader community. By freeing up 911 resources, the CCD Line allows emergency responders to focus on other pressing situations. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health, aiming for targeted and compassionate interventions in times of need.

The City of Raleigh continues to promote this program as a critical step towards enhancing mental health resources. Additional information, insights from participating clinicians, and updates on the program’s progress can be found on the City of Raleigh website.

As communities increasingly recognize the significance of mental health, programs like the CCD Line serve as vital interventions, helping to connect individuals with the support they require during challenging times.
