Sanford Worthington Medical Center Hosts Community Blood Drive
Sanford Worthington Medical Center will host a community blood drive on February 5, 2024, aiming to bolster local blood supplies and support patients in need. The event will take place at 1018 Sixth Ave., with donation times scheduled from 08:00 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 16:30.
Addressing Blood Donation Shortages
The need for blood donations has reached a critical level, according to Ken Versteeg, executive director of the Community Blood Bank. He highlighted that a severe cold and flu season has hindered many regular donors from participating, leading to shortages that challenge hospitals’ capabilities to meet patient needs.
“Blood requirements are constantly shifting and unpredictable,” Versteeg stated. “Maintaining a stable supply requires community volunteers to step forward with this life-saving gift. We welcome both new donors and returning supporters to join us on February 5.”
Versteeg emphasized that every donation plays a vital role in ensuring preparedness for winter challenges. The drive seeks to attract individuals willing to contribute to the community’s health and wellbeing.
Eligibility and Incentives for Donors
Individuals interested in donating blood must meet several eligibility criteria. They should be at least 17 years old (or 16 with signed parental consent), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good general health. To ensure a successful donation, participants are advised to eat a meal and stay hydrated before their appointment and to bring a valid form of identification.
As a gesture of appreciation, all blood donors will receive a $20 gift card valid at Kwik Trip. This incentive is designed to encourage participation and express gratitude for the donors’ generosity.
To schedule an appointment for the blood drive, interested individuals can visit cbblifeblood.org, select “donate now,” navigate to the “blood drive calendar,” choose February 5, and click on “Sanford Worthington Medical Center.” Alternatively, they can call the Community Blood Bank at (605) 331-3222.
This initiative by Sanford Worthington Medical Center underscores the importance of community involvement in maintaining essential health resources and highlights how individual contributions can significantly impact local healthcare capabilities.
