Syringa Hospital’s board of trustees convened on December 17, 2023, to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing community health services and increasing awareness of available medical resources. Key topics included the promotion of wellness exams, weight loss consultations, and initiatives to rebuild trust within the community.

Community relations and marketing coordinator Hannah Seitz presented several ideas designed to elevate the visibility of the hospital’s providers and bolster the clinic’s reputation. One of her primary points was the announcement of extended hours for the walk-in clinic, which she emphasized should be communicated effectively to the public.

Trustee Jim Paradiso raised a pertinent question regarding the availability of geriatric-focused providers within the clinic. Given the demographic trends in the area, he suggested that establishing a dedicated focus on geriatrics could be beneficial. Bruce Shepard, the interim CEO from Ovation Healthcare, acknowledged the lack of a singular geriatric provider but assured that clinic staff would continue to emphasize Medicare wellness exams. These exams are crucial for assessing overall health and formulating personalized prevention plans for patients.

Paradiso further expressed the need for effective marketing strategies to convey the significance of these wellness exams. He noted, “Plenty of my friends and I feel this is BS. We need some marketing on it — why is it good? Why is it important, needed?” This sentiment highlights a gap in understanding that the board aims to address through improved communication.

Trustee Terri Tackett also called for greater community education regarding weight loss treatments. Tackett pointed out that many individuals often turn to social media for answers rather than consulting with their healthcare providers. She emphasized the necessity of providing clear information about the medications prescribed for weight loss and their potential side effects.

Seitz highlighted that Nathan Winder, a knowledgeable provider at the clinic, is particularly passionate about addressing weight-related goals. She noted that Winder serves as a critical resource for patients considering surgical options, stating, “He is the stop before surgical options.”

The Chief Operating Officer, Michelle Schaeffer, reinforced that all providers at the clinic have access to the same resources for patient care. She explained that Winder’s approach to weight loss is comprehensive, focusing not only on traditional methods but also examining how current medications might affect weight management. Schaeffer stated, “Dr. Smith and PA-C Winder work very well together,” highlighting the collaborative effort within the clinic to ensure that patients receive the best care possible.

The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding among board members that enhancing community education and visibility of health services is essential to rebuild trust and improve overall community health. These discussions signal a proactive approach by Syringa Hospital to address the health needs of its community effectively.
