Tatiana Schlossberg, the granddaughter of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 35 after a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia. The environmental journalist and author, who was the daughter of Caroline Kennedy, died following a diagnosis she revealed in an essay published in The New Yorker last month.

In her poignant essay, Schlossberg disclosed that she was diagnosed with a “rare mutation” of acute myeloid leukemia in May 2024, shortly after the birth of her second child. She expressed her fears about the impact of her illness on her young children, writing, “During the latest clinical trial, my doctor told me that he could keep me alive for a year, maybe. My first thought was that my kids, whose faces live permanently on the inside of my eyelids, wouldn’t remember me.”

Schlossberg shared her emotional struggles throughout her treatment, particularly the challenges of bonding with her children. She reflected on the time lost due to her illness, stating, “I didn’t ever really get to take care of my daughter — I couldn’t change her diaper or give her a bath or feed her, all because of the risk of infection after my transplants. I was gone for almost half of her first year of life.”

Her heartfelt words captured the essence of a mother’s love and the deep-seated fears that accompany a terminal diagnosis. “So many of them are from my childhood that I feel as if I’m watching myself and my kids grow up at the same time,” she wrote, conveying both nostalgia and the pain of uncertainty.

She is also remembered by her parents, Caroline Kennedy and Ed Schlossberg, as well as her siblings, Rose and Jack Schlossberg.
