Boulder Secures Sundance Film Festival, Celebrates Inclusivity
On April 8, 2024, Colorado’s Governor Jared Polis signed a landmark Tax Incentive bill, securing funding for film festivals in the state and officially bringing the prestigious Sundance Film Festival to Boulder. The successful bid, which involved competition from 60 cities, promises significant economic benefits for the region. In 2024, the festival generated $132 million in economic activity for Utah, including $13.8 million in tax revenue and $69.7 million in wages. The arrival of Sundance in 2027 is expected to create similar opportunities for Boulder and the broader Colorado economy.
Bettina Swigger, CEO of the Downtown Boulder Partnership, expressed profound gratitude for the collaborative efforts that made this achievement possible. She highlighted the roles played by the Visit Boulder Team, city officials, and state representatives in this successful endeavor. Swigger likened this moment to pivotal historical events in Boulder’s development, which include the establishment of the University of Colorado in 1876 and the arrival of IBM in 1967.
“Winning this bid is one of the three pivotal moments for the business community in Boulder,” said George Karakehian, a former city council member and owner of Art Source International. Swigger added that Boulder’s reputation as an inclusive community has been cultivated over many years, with significant contributions from local advocates.
A poignant aspect of this announcement was its timing, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Clela Rorex issuing the first same-sex marriage license in the United States. Rorex’s courageous decision in 1974 has since become a cornerstone of Boulder’s identity. The day before the festival’s announcement, Governor Polis, who is married to a man, stood in front of the Boulder County Courthouse, proudly flanked by the Colorado flag and a pride flag, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in the community.
The implications of this announcement extend beyond mere economics. Swigger stressed that fostering a legacy of inclusivity is not only morally right but also strategically beneficial. Communities known for their openness attract diverse talent and innovative investors, which in turn spurs long-term economic growth. She believes that Boulder’s values are integral to its success and appeal.
Adding to this historical significance, the Boulder County Courthouse, where Rorex issued that groundbreaking license, will be officially designated a National Historic Landmark in May 2024. This recognition celebrates not only the courthouse’s architectural beauty but also its role in the ongoing struggle for equality.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the Museum of Boulder’s exhibit titled “Bending the Arc,” which highlights the contributions of LGBTQ+ activists to the city’s vibrant culture. These stories form an essential part of Boulder’s narrative and its commitment to an inclusive future.
As Boulder prepares to host the Sundance Film Festival, the community looks forward to the economic boost and cultural enrichment it will bring, reinforcing the city’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
