Celebrating the Legacy of Jim Knapp: A Life of Impact
The family of James Rochester Knapp, affectionately known as Jim, has announced his passing at the age of 89. He died in 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy rooted in Southern California, where he made significant contributions both professionally and personally. His family reflects on his unwavering faith, generosity, and sharp wit as they celebrate a life well-lived.
Born in 1936 in San Bernardino, California, Jim’s journey began in a region he cherished. He met his future wife, Sally Diane Dewar, while they were both students at Stanford University. Their love story culminated in marriage in September 1958. Following their wedding, they moved to San Francisco, where Jim earned his law degree from Hastings College of Law, setting the stage for a distinguished career.
Jim began his legal practice at Kindel and Anderson in Santa Ana. He later partnered with close friends to establish a law firm in Newport Beach, known as Kalmbach, DeMarco, Knapp and Chillingworth. This venture marked the beginning of a transition from law to real estate, where Jim became a pioneering figure in Southern California development. His work at Dunn Properties and Pacific Enterprises significantly shaped the region’s landscape.
In 1973, Jim founded Brookhollow, a family business where he served as Chairman and strategic advisor. He took great joy in mentoring his sons and grandsons, sharing the values of hard work and integrity that guided his own life. His professional achievements were complemented by a deep commitment to community service.
Jim served on the boards of several organizations, including Hoag Hospital and Harbor Day School. He was also a founding member of both The Pacific Club and Big Canyon Country Club, and held an officer position at Pacific Enterprises. His contributions to these institutions reflected his dedication to improving his community.
Jim and Sally enjoyed a lasting marriage that spanned 68 years. Together, they traveled extensively, yet always prioritized their family. Jim’s deep Christian faith played a central role in his life. He found solace in reading the Bible, listening to esteemed Christian leaders, and attending services at Mariners Church.
His engaging conversations, sharp intellect, and quiet generosity touched many lives. Jim leaves behind his beloved wife, Sally Knapp, and a robust family that includes children Angi Evans (Pete), Greg Knapp (Vida), and Tommy Knapp (Bethany), along with his niece Donna Miller. He is also survived by cherished grandchildren, including Robert Knapp (Jillian), James Peter “J.P.” Knapp, and Clayton Knapp (Lauren), among others, plus five great-grandchildren, with two more expected in 2026.
A service in memory of Jim will take place at Mariners Church on December 15 at 10:30 in the morning. Following the service, a private burial will occur at Pacific View Memorial Park. The family finds comfort in knowing that a good and faithful man has completed his journey and is now at peace.
