Chelsea’s Voice to Celebrate 34th Birthday with Community Block Party
On March 22, 2024, Chelsea’s Voice will host a block party to mark the 34th birthday of its founder, Chelsea Fabiszak. This nonprofit organization, dedicated to supporting families with disabilities, aims to promote community inclusion and provide essential resources for caregivers. The event will take place in a festive atmosphere designed to bring people together and raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
Chelsea was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a severe neurodevelopmental disorder, at a young age. Initially given a grim prognosis, she has defied expectations and continues to inspire those around her. Despite being wheelchair-bound and unable to speak or eat independently, Chelsea has become a celebrated figure in her community. She holds the title of honorary member of the San Diego State University Dance Team and enjoys attending various events, including live country music performances.
Veleria Pittman-Fabiszak, Chelsea’s mother and the creator of Chelsea’s Voice, explains the mission of the nonprofit: “Families are overwhelmed with therapies, appointments, education battles and medical issues. Advocating becomes exhausting. We want Chelsea’s Voice to be a place where people can say, ‘I need help,’ and not feel alone.” The organization is set to relaunch this spring with the block party, which will feature live music, face painting, line dancing, and a chili and rib cook-off, among other activities.
Pittman-Fabiszak intentionally chose a casual neighborhood gathering over a formal gala to encourage wider participation. “My philosophy is spend less, make more,” she stated. “If you can have fun while doing it, even better.” The nonprofit not only assists families in securing medical equipment and respite care but also seeks to provide emotional support. “We all need compassion,” she emphasized. “Sometimes, it starts with just showing up for each other.”
Chelsea’s Voice began as a grassroots initiative in 2018, raising over $18,000 at its first event. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted its momentum, forcing the cancellation of its major fundraiser in March 2020. During that time, the organization adapted by implementing smaller fundraising efforts and delivering holiday gifts across San Diego County. Pittman-Fabiszak recalls dressing as Mrs. Claus to visit families during the holiday season, providing socially-distanced support and encouragement.
Despite facing personal challenges, including Chelsea’s health struggles and a divorce, Pittman-Fabiszak made a commitment to revive Chelsea’s Voice. “While being in the hospital, I knew I needed to make [Chelsea’s Voice] something,” she remarked. “Chelsea is going through these things for a reason. Her story is not done.”
The emotional health of individuals with disabilities is closely tied to social connections, which can significantly affect their overall well-being. Pittman-Fabiszak has witnessed improvements in Chelsea’s alertness and engagement when she participates in community events. “When she’s around people and stimulation, she’s more alert, she’s smiling, she’s more engaged,” she explained. “When that’s taken away, she regresses. Humans are meant to be around other humans.”
In addition to supporting families, Chelsea’s Voice is working towards developing an accessible playground at Spreckels Park. Pittman-Fabiszak emphasizes the importance of visibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. “It’s not a playground for those with disabilities. It’s a playground for everyone,” she asserted. She is also collaborating with city leaders in Coronado to enhance recreational options, ensuring children of all abilities can play together.
Pittman-Fabiszak advocates for a community that embraces inclusivity, stating, “I never wanted Chelsea to impede anyone else’s experience.” She believes that spending time with individuals with disabilities enriches the entire community. “If you spend time with Chelsea, she makes you better at whatever you do,” she added.
Chelsea’s impact extends beyond her immediate circle, inspiring others to pursue education and professional opportunities. Several mothers have expressed gratitude for the inclusive experiences Chelsea has provided, which have positively influenced their own children.
As Chelsea’s Voice prepares for its upcoming event, the organization is actively seeking board members, volunteers, and student involvement, particularly from local teens interested in contributing skills such as video production, website development, or event support. This community block party not only celebrates Chelsea’s life but also reinforces the commitment to creating a supportive network for families with disabilities. As Pittman-Fabiszak concludes, “When people hear the real story — the hardships and the victories — they connect. This isn’t just about one family. This is about building a community where no one feels isolated.”
