The Dallas Theater Center (DTC) has officially announced the appointment of Jaime Castañeda as its new artistic director, effective July 2026. This marks a significant transition for the esteemed theater, which is recognized with a Tony Award for its contributions to the performing arts. Castañeda will be the sixth artistic director in DTC’s history, taking over leadership responsibilities during the upcoming 2026-27 season.

Currently, Jonathan Norton, the resident playwright at DTC, is serving as the interim artistic director. He will continue to guide the theater through the remainder of the 2025-26 season, which is set to conclude with the world premiere of his play, Malcolm X and Redd Foxx Washing Dishes, at Jimmy’s Chicken Shack in Harlem in May.

In a press release, Lynn Pride Richardson, chair of the board, expressed confidence in Castañeda’s leadership. “DTC is committed to artistic excellence and community engagement,” she stated. “We believe Jaime’s experience, creativity, bold vision, and proven leadership will guide DTC into an exciting new chapter.”

Jaime Castañeda’s career in the Dallas-Fort Worth area spans over two decades. He first gained recognition by founding Firestarter Productions while studying at Texas Christian University. His directorial work at DTC includes the acclaimed production of The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity by Kristoffer Diaz in 2012. Beyond DTC, he has directed for various local theaters, including Kitchen Dog Theater, Amphibian Stage, and Circle Theatre.

His accolades include prestigious awards such as the Princess Grace Award and the Drama League Directing Fellowship. Castañeda holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas Christian University and a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the University of Texas at Austin. His recent directing credits extend to prominent theaters across the United States, including the American Conservatory Theater, South Coast Repertory, Huntington Theatre Company, and La Jolla Playhouse, where he served as associate artistic director from 2014 to 2018.

“Jaime brings a bold, visceral artistic vision, a deep commitment to new voices, and a collaborative leadership style,” said Kevin Moriarty, DTC’s executive director. “His Texas roots and national experience make him an exciting addition to our team.” Moriarty has known Castañeda since 2007, recognizing him as a standout emerging director in North Texas.

As artistic director, Castañeda will oversee the theater’s artistic vision, direct and produce plays and musicals, and manage DTC’s Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company. He will collaborate closely with Moriarty, the staff, and the board of trustees to further DTC’s mission and values.

Castañeda follows in the footsteps of a distinguished line of artistic directors at DTC, including founding director Paul Baker, Adrian Hall, Ken Bryant, Richard Hamburger, and Moriarty, who held the position from 2007 to 2022.

DTC board member Chris Luna noted, “We are extremely pleased with a successful national search that brings Jaime to Dallas Theater Center. His energy is contagious and he understands Texas and Dallas. We look forward to collaborating with him as he continues his innovative approach to regional theater.”

The selection of Castañeda followed a comprehensive national search led by Management Consultants for the Arts. The search committee, co-chaired by Luna and Richardson, included key members from the theater community and academic institutions.

Reflecting on his new role, Castañeda shared, “Growing up in Texas, Dallas Theater Center was one of the first places where I saw what professional theater and excellence looked like. I’m thrilled to come back and build on the history of artists and leaders who have been part of this organization.” He expressed eagerness to collaborate with Moriarty, the board, and the staff to create impactful theatrical experiences.

Currently, DTC is presenting its production of A Christmas Carol, which runs through December 27 at the Wyly Theatre.
