Detroit Lakes Commemorates 10th Annual Wreaths Across America Day
On December 20, 2023, residents of Detroit Lakes gathered to honor the 10th Annual Wreaths Across America Day. Despite the biting cold and strong winds, Tom and Pam Mortenson, along with dedicated volunteers, led a heartfelt ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park.
The local observance was initially set for December 13, but was postponed due to Pam Mortenson’s emergency surgery. The Mortensons have been instrumental in organizing this event for several years, ensuring that the sacrifices of veterans are remembered and honored.
Significance of the Ceremony
During the ceremony, participants recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Tom Mortenson emphasized its significance, especially as the nation prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence in 2026. Mortenson mentioned that plans for special celebrations are already underway to mark this historic occasion.
Following the ceremony, the group proceeded to lay wreaths at several notable locations, including Grand Army of the Republic Park on Washington Avenue, which is among just three GAR parks still in existence in the United States. They also visited Lyle Crovisier Memorial Park, where the Boys and Girls Club is located, as well as Oak Grove Cemetery and Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Wreaths Across America Mission
Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2007, aimed at expanding the annual wreath-laying ceremony initiated at Arlington National Cemetery by Maine wreath maker Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization operates with a mission to “remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom.”
This mission is fulfilled through coordinated wreath-laying ceremonies across communities nationwide each December. Locally, the event is sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Women’s Relief Corps and the Tom and Pam Mortenson Fund, reflecting a strong community commitment to honoring those who have served in the military.
The event not only serves as a tribute to fallen soldiers but also fosters a sense of community and remembrance, encouraging attendees to reflect on the sacrifices made for the freedoms enjoyed today.
